C12 THE JOURNAL-NEWS, SUNDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1989 SERIES, From page C1 Ai ir unM Ai i LfltVKUrto Aav I i 1 "Stewart had his fastball the whole game," San Francisco manager Roger Craig said. "I thought he might tire, but he did not." McGwire, Terry Steinbach, Tony Phillips and Suffern's Walt Weiss were a combined 7 for 16 with three runs scored and two RBI, including a bases-empty homer by Weiss to give Oakland a 4-0 margin in the fourth inning. Stewart, meanwhile, yielded only three hits before the ninth inning and did not allow a runner past second base in the first eight innings. Oakland took command almost immediately with a three-run second inning against Scott Garrelts. Dave Henderson started the uprising against Garrelts by walking on a 3-1 pitch.

The right-handed Steinbach, who got a vote of confidence with a start over Ron Hassey against the A Weiss wallop Suffern resident Walter Weiss hit his first career World Series homer in Oakland's 5-0 win over San Francisco last night in Game 1 of the Fall Classic Weiss, last year's American League Rookie of the Year, had hit only six homers in his 714 previous pro at bats. He hit three homers this season. The homer came in the fourth inning and upped Oakland's lead to 5-0. It came on a 1-1 pitch from starter Scott Garrelts. Weiss, a switch hitter, hit the homer left handed.

Weiss has been sharing time at shortstop with Mike Gallago since a knee injury sidelined him for 65 games. Oakland manager Tony La Russa named Weiss to the starting lineup Friday night. "The home runs were bad pitches, mistakes," Garrelts said. "I got behind Dave Parker and threw a fastball down the middle, and Walt Weiss hit a forkball which hung up." right-handed Garrelts, capitalized on his opportunity with a sharp single to center that sent Henderson to second. Phillips then rammed a single past second that brought in Henderson and allowed Steinbach to advance to third.

Garrelts appeared to have the second out of the inning when Weiss tapped to first baseman Will Clark. He made a good throw to the plate that put catcher Terry Kennedy in perfect position to tag out Steinbach, but Kennedy fumbled the ball for an error. Steinbach slid in safely with the gift run. Rickey Henderson, who had grounded out in his first at-bat, rifled a single to right that scored Phillips from second with the third run. Garrelts finally got out of the inning by getting Carney Lansford to pop out to right and by striking out Canseco.

In the third, Dave Parker unloaded on Garrelts' 2-0 pitch, sending it deep into the right-field seats. The 38-year-old slugger had gone 93 postseason at-bats without homering until he connected twice to help power Oakland's five-game trampling of Toronto in the playoffs. Parker had gone 12 previous World Series games without reaching the seats. The bottom of the order struck again to begin the fourth inning, and it was the No. 9 hitter Weiss who did the damage.

Weiss was something of a surprise starter because after a knee injury the 1988 Rookie of the Year had lost the shortstop job to Mike Gallego. Steinbach scored after Walt Weiss, a Suffem resident, grounded to first baseman Will Clark who threw home in an attempt to nail Steinbach. Kennedy was charged with an error as home plate umpire Rich Garcia makes the call. Series dedicated to Giammatti A moment of silence was observed, and all flags flew at half-staff as they will throughout the Series.
