The Cadets never expected that their wishbone offense would be watching helplessly from the bench for minutes on end. East Carolina married its goal of scoring quickly with a surprising ball-control passing attack in a 33-14 Conference USA win over Army before 36,769 at Michie Stadium. The Pirates have won their first five games for the first time since 1976. Though Army (1-3, 0-2) ultimately controlled the ball for 32:41, the Pirates (W), 1-0) held the ball for 11:48 of the first quarter as they built a 16-0 halllime lead. The Cadets were able to manage just two fourth-quarter touchdowns.

"We played well enough in the first half on defense to be in position to win," Army coach Bob Sutton said. "We didn't play well enough on offense and special teams. We needed at least one other thing to stand out and make something happen." Freshman kicker Kevin Miller tied an East Carolina record with four field goals, including a 52-yarder in the second quarter and a 48-yard kick in the third quarter. His 52-yard field goal set a Michie Stadium record for an Army opponent East Carolina sophomore quarterback David Garrard completed 24 of 34 passes for 300 yards. "(Army) played very well in the box but, luckily, we were able to expose their defensive backs and pass the ball," Garrard said.

Garrard's aerial display included a 62-yard touchdown pass to sophomore receiver Arnie Powell that gave the Pirates a 16-0 lead with 8:13 left in the second quarter. He was 13 of 17 for 149 yards in the first quarter alone. "Garrard did a nice job of hitting his 'hot' routes because we were getting good pressure on him most of the day," Army junior linebacker Lyle Weaver said. Army was actually spared a worse fate as junior Keith Stokes returned punts 89 and 61 yards in the first and third quarters, respectively, for apparent touchr downs. However, both plays were called back because of downfield; blocking penalties. By then, though. East Carolina had clearly established control of the game. On the game's first drive, the Pirates drove 59 yards and held the ball for 4:11 before Miller kicked a 30-yard field goal.

East Carolina converted on third down on the drive and Garrard gained 3 yards on a fourth-and; one from the Army 21-yard line, i Army's first two possessions went three-and-out, and the Ca. dets' initial first down did not come until there was 13:52 left in, the first half. The loss continued Army's bacj luck against ranked opponents. The Cadets have not defeated a Top 25 team since 1972. Manhattanvffle 7, Baruch 2 Singles Alexandra Valentin (M) d.
