D8 Gollcnc football Sunday, Sept. 6, 1981 Miami stuns Pitt, Rutgers tr I I Its, I k. 1 1 1 'Caff fJt WMMiyiH Mil ww im i Herschel Walker lunges for a touchdown for Georgia Georgia thrashes Vols; Florida State triumphs No. 17 Florida MIAMI (AP) Danny Miller kicked a 55-yard field goal that hit the left upright and bounced through with 45 seconds to play Saturday to lift Miami of Florida to a 21-20 college football upset over No. 17 Florida.

Miller, who created a stir last November when he kicked a field goal as time expired in a 31-7 Miami rout of the Gators, was mobbed at midfield by teammates as a season-opening crowd of 73,817 went wild. Junior quarterback Mark Richt, who replaced injured starter Jim Kelly in the third quarter, directed the game-winning drive, which began at the Miami 36-yard line with 2:48 remaining. A key play in the march which reached the Florida 34 was a 20-yard completion to reserve tight end Glenn Dennison. Three plays later, Miller came on in a four-and-14 situation and kicked the winning three-pointer. Florida took the ensuing kickoff and drove to the Miami 42-yard line, but Brian Clark's 59-yard field goal attempt fell short as time ran out.

Florida turned two first-half interceptions into touchdowns that lifted the Gators to a 14-3 half time lead. Fullback James Jones ran 7 yards for a touchdown and a 7-3 Florida lead after senior defensive tackle David Galloway picked off a Kelly pass at the Miami 25 and rambled 18 yards. Florida's second touchdown a 37-yard scoring pass from Wayne Peace to wide receiver Spencer Jackson came after an interception by sophomore safety Tiny Lilly. The Gators, who were 0-10-1 two years ago but 8-4 in 1980, completely dominated the Hurricanes in the opening 30 minutes. But Kelly engineered an 11-play, 82-yard touchdown drive in the opening five minutes of the third period as Miami, 9-3 a year ago, moved back into the game.

Mississippi 19, Tulane 18 NEW ORLEANS (AP) Sophomore quarterback Kelly Powell hit senior flanker Breck Tyler with a 39-yard scoring toss with 1:01 left in the game to rally Mississippi to a 19-18 victory over Tulane after the Rebels had frittered away a 12-0 lead in the college football game. Providing Mississippi's only real offensive spark of the second half, Powell marched the Rebels 86 yards in the final three minutes of the game for the winning touchdown. Junior kicker Todd Gatlin booted the extra point to give Mississippi its narrow margin of victory. Mississippi opened a 12-0 lead on a two-yard run by Buford McGee in the first quarter and on field goals of 22 yartis and 27 yards by Gatlin in the first half. Seeing his first varsity action ever, sophomore quarterback Wade Elmore hit 14 of 25 passes and had apparently rallied Tulane to victory after a lethargic first half.

Clemson 45, Wofford 10 CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) Clemson quarterback Homer Jordan ran for two touchdowns and threw for two others as the Tigers routed Wofford, 45-10, Saturday in a raggedly played season football opener for both teams. Five Clemson players scored touchdowns and sophomore place kicker Donald Igwebuike began his college career in grand fashion, kicking a 52-yard field goal on his first attempt. E.Kentucky 26, S.Carolina 0 RICHMOND, Ky. (AP) Chris Isaac ran for the only score that was needed, and Eastern Kentucky's defense did the rest as the Colonels walloped South Carolina State 26-0 in the college football opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.

Eastern Kentucky, runnerup in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs last year, limited the visitors to 118 offensive yards and caused four turnovers. Kentucky 28, North Texas St. 6 LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) Greg Long galloped 91 yards for a touchdown with his third pass interception of the game Saturday as Kentucky defeated North Texas State 28-6 in a college football season opener. Quarterback Randy Jenkins came off the Kentucky bench to throw touchdown passes of 13 and nine yards, and Henry Parks bolted two yards for another score.

are victorious PITTSBURGH (AP) Junior quarterback Dan Marino, unruffled by a shaky start, threw two touchdown passes to lead eighth-ranked Pittsburgh to a 26-6 victory over Illinois Saturday in their college football opener. Marino hit only two of 14 passes the first half, but one of them was a 19-yard touchdown toss to flanker Dwight Collins that gave Pitt a 14-0 lead with 1:20 left in the first quarter. The score came one play after Illinois Chris Sigourney shanked a 16-yard punt out of bounds. Earlier in the first quarter, Pitt's Wayne DiBar? tola ran four yards for a touchdown, set up by a fumble by Illinois running back Darrell Smith at his own 11. Rutgers 29, Syracuse 27 SYRACUSE, N.Y.

(AP) Joe Morris raced 95 yards for a touchdown on a third-quarter kickoff return Saturday, but Syracuse's comeback effort fell short as Rutgers defeated the Orangemen yi NCAA Division I football, 29-27. Morris's runback narrowed the Syracuse deficit to 22-20, but Rutgers rebounded with an 80-yard touchdown drive capped by Ralph Leek's quarterback sneak. Syracuse narrowed the gap again, 29-27, on a 56-yard punt return by defensive back Ed Koban and a touchdown run by Morris, who took a pitchout from quarterback Dave Warner at the tj yard line. With a Carrier Dome crowd of 38,715 on its feet. Syracuse held the Scarlet Knights on their next possession, but couldn't score again.

Boston U. 24, USMMA 13 BOSTON (AP) Junior tailback Gregg Drew rushed for 122 yards and scored two touchdowns while defensive back Ken Green set a school record of three interceptions Saturday to lead Boston University to a 24-13 victory over the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Kansas 15, Tulsa 11 TULSA, Okla. (AP) Free safety Roger Foote'S 48-yard interception return for a fourth-quarter touchdown gave Kansas a 15-11 comeback win over Tulsa in the college football opener for both teams Saturday night.

Foote, a 6-3 junior, gathered in a Kenny Jackson pass and rushed down the sidelines to erase an Urd Tulsa advantage. Va. St. 13, Delaware St. 12 PETERSBURG, Va.

(AP) Fullback Johnny Rowe's second touchdown, on a pass from a fake field goal try in the third quarter, rallied Virginia State's Trojans to a season-opening 13-12 football victory Saturday over Delaware State's Hornets. Rowe caught an 18-yard pass from quarterback Alvin Hampton with 8:37 left in the third period and Melvin Knight's successful conversion proved the difference. The Trojans had driven 74 yards in 16 plays after taking the second-half kickoff. SMU 48, Texas-Arl. 0 IRVING, Texas (AP) Craig James rushed for 136 yards and three touchdowns while backfield running mate Eric Dickerson added 164 yards and another touchdown as Southern Methodist buried Texas-Arlington, 48-0, Saturday night.

The Mustang offense, sluggish during the first two periods, got untracked in the third quarter, notching three touchdowns on a 2-yard run by Dickerson and James scampers of 3 and 8 yards. Grambling 21, Florida 10 NEW YORK (AP) Thomas Ezell completed 24 of 38 passes for 282 yards, including 10 passes to wingback Trumaine Johnson for 149 yards, to lead Grambling to a 21-10 season-opening victory over Florida Saturday night in the 11th New York Urban League Classic at Yankee Stadium. Grambling, which took a 14-10 halftime lead, opened the scoring in the first quarter with a five-play, 35-yard drive, following a fake punt attempt that failed. Jerry Elzy ran in from two yards out for the touchdown. Houston 21, New Mexico 10 HOUSTON (AP) Houston sophomore quarterback Audrey McMillian, who played only 41 minutes last season, scored two touchdowns and directed a potent ground game Saturday night to lead the Cougars to a season-opening 21-10 victory over New Mexico.

a ATHENS, Ga. (AP) Buck Belue fired two touchdown strikes to Lindsay Scott and Ail-American tailback Herschel Walker ran for 161 yards and one score as defending national champion Georgia smashed Tennessee 44-0 Saturday in a Southeastern Conference opener for both schools. Walker scored his touchdown on a one-yard plunge at the end of a 92-yard drive with which the 10th-ranked Bulldogs opened the game enroute to their 14th consecutive victory, longest in the nation. Belue, who connected on 10 of 15 passes for 140 yards, hit Scott with a 15-yard scoring shot in the second quarter and came back with a 23-yarder in the third quarter. Freshman kicker Kevin Butler boomed three field goals for the Bulldogs, covering 36, 44 and 45 yards.

Georgia reserves added two fourth quarter touchdowns, one on an eight-yard run by Matt Simon with 6:34 remaining and the other by Jeff Paulk on a one-yard keeper only 18 seconds from the end. Tennessee's only threat of the day was erased by a penalty for having too many men on the field. It came when Leonard Jackson blocked a punt by Georgia's Jim Broadway which was scooped up and returned 15 yards to the end zone by the Vols' Mike L. Cofer. The final 44-point margin was the history of the series, which Georgia now leads 9-8-2.

The game also attracted a state record crowd of 79,600 into the expanded Sanford Stadium. Fla. St. 17, Louisville 0 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) Freshmen Mike Ren-dina, Billy Allen and Jesse Hester scored all the points Saturday night as 19th-ranked Florida State blew by Louisville 17-0 in a season-opening college football game.

Tailback Allen, discovered at a European coaching clinic playing Air Force football, broke away on a late 50-yard scoring jaunt to put the contest out of the Cardinals' reach. S.Carolina 23, Wake Forest 6 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) Quarterback Terry Bishop ran and passed for 165 yards to lead South Carolina over Wake Forest, 23-6, in a non-conference college football game Saturday night. Even without Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers, it was the Gamecock ground game that wore the Deacons down. South Carolina piled up 271 yards, using a variety of running backs: The South Carolina defense shut down the Deacon offense, which came alive only once late in the game.

And the Gamecock offense consistently took advantage of the Wake Forest defense, which spent a lot of time on the field. BYU 31, Long Beach St. 6 ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Quarterback Jim McMa-hon, the nation's leading passer last season, threw for 403 yards Saturday to pace 16th-ranked Brigham Young to a 31-6 non-conference football victory over Long Beach State in the 1981 opener for both teams. McMahon completed 28 of his 45 passes and had two throws intercepted.

He did not connect for any scores, however, as the BYU defense provided two touchdowns and the others came on runs. Auburn 24, TCU 16 AUBURN, Ala. (AP) Freshman fullback Ron O'Neal ran for two scores and set up a third with a 32-yard ramble as Auburn defeated Texas Christian 24-16 Saturday in a victorious debut for Auburn Coach Pat Dye. O'Neal, a 245 pounder from Atlanta, sat out virtually all of the second half with leg cramps. But he helped stake Auburn to a 21 10 half time lead with his bullish bursts up the middle, and Auburn held off TCU in the final quarters for victory in the opening game for both teams.

Miss. St. 20, Memphis St. 3 JACKSON, Miss. (AP) Fullback Donald Ray King scored one touchdown and helped set up a field goal before leaving with an injury as 14th-ranked Mississippi State rolled to a 20-3 football victory over the Memphis State Tigers Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore quarterback John Bond led the Bulldogs to a field goal and two touchdowns on three straight possessions in the first half to seal the victory against the inexperienced but pesky Tigers in the opener for both teams. Temple 42, Wm. Mary 0 PHILADELPHIA (AP) Junior running back Jim Brown ran for three touchdowns and caught one of three scoring passes from quarterback Tink Murphy as Temple walloped William Mary 42-0 Saturday night in college football. Brown carried 16 times for 125 yards before leaving the game in the third period. He scored on runs of 15, 1, and 30 yards and caught a 2-yard scoring pass from Murphy.

Murphy also connected on a 7-yard scoring pass to Gerald Lucear and a 42-yard strike to Tracy Hall. Murphy, a senior, completed 14 of 24 passes for 229 yards.
