DISN Movie The Arizona Daily Star "Manimal," a new NBC series about a man who can assume the body of any type of animal, premieres at 7:30 tonight on Channel 4 in a 90-minute special. Suave British actor Simon Mac--Corkindale stars as Professor Jon-'athan Chase, psychologist and consultant to the New York Police Department, who uses his incredible powers to track down criminals and bring them to justice. to be sure, "Manimal" is escapist entertainment.

But it is entertainment that in its normal time slot of 8 p.m. Friday gives youngsters an al- temative to watching J.R. Ewing skewer his relatives on "Dallas." But to allow older viewers to join in watching "Manimal" without getting mad or going mad, executive producer Glen Larson Million Dollar Man," "Magnum P. and "The Fall maintains a wry sense of. humor throughout the whole improbable show.

In tonight's episode, for instance, Chase turns himself into a soft and cuddly white cat to invade the bed- room of a gangster's mistress, played by Ursula Andress. Andress lounges in a beautiful silk robe, stroking the eavesdropping cat in her lap, completely unaware that there is a stranger in her room listening to every word her boyfriend says. At one point, when the conversation gets dull, the cat eases himself inside her robe, finally popping up beneath Andress' chin to give his head a satisfied shake. It is a funny scene, and one of many such sight gags that keep "Mammal's" tone light and irreverent. Helping Chase track down the criminals is NYPD Detective Brooke McKenzie (Melody Anderson).

In tonight's premiere, Brooke comes upon an attempted arms heist that has been upset by the sudden appearance of a black panther. The panther is wounded in the ensuing gun battle. Brooke tracks the animal into a dead-end alley only to find a wounded man instead, a man she 1 later learns is Chase. The panther has disappeared, but tests show that the panther's blood is human. "Normally, Chase can control going in and out of the changes," producer Larson explained to television critics last June, "but when he lost consciousness he reverted involuntarily. "That, will place him in jeopardy when it happens in the wrong circumstances.

And, of course, when he is in animal form he is as vulnerable to being killed or wounded as any such animal. So Chase is no invulnerable super hero." How Chase received his powers remains a bit vague, however. "The story is that his father researched into 'the dark secrets of mind control' using both medicine and mind-controlling substances," Larson says with less than total seriousness. But supervising producer Donald R. Boyle is very serious when he says "Manimal" is unique because of the twist it gives to mythology.

"It dawned on me that in the past the idea of combining the human and the animal has been for extensions of evil," Boyle said. "But no one had ever approached it from a heroic, positive point of view. So that was the genesis for Whatever the source of the idea, "Manimal" is ideal for television. Imagine a detective who can follow a criminal as a bird in the sky or tail a man on the ground as a dog, who can see in the dark with a panther's eyes, run with the speed of a cheetah, look over a fence as a giraffe, or frighten with the roar of a lion. The possibilities are endless, and entertaining.

For minds tired after a hard week at work or school, "Manimal" promises an hour of harmless fun and fantasy. 4:30 P.M.
