The Nogales. First Ripe Figs. From the Yumn Times. A ripe fig, measuring eight and one-half inches in circumference, was picked from a tree in Judgo Brinley's garden on April 29th. This is the earliest date of ripening of figs on record.

Tho main crop will begin to ripen in about a week, and wiil be marketed in Sun Francisco, where from 75 ceuts to a dollar a pound will lw realized. If we had the earliest varieties of apricots and peaches they would ripen lie-fore or with figs as they do in Vaeaville, where such fruits will not ripen for a month. Lucky Cuss. From the Prospector. The drill on the 800-foot level is prospecting with positive results as far as water is concerned.

Tha ilow is strong enough to keep both pumps going at their best. The hand drill works like a charm. Tho longest hole drilled was seveaty-five feet and no trouble was encountered in driving it. The ledge is is streaked with high-grade ore, but the direction in which the best ground is believed to be cannot be touched with the drill, owing to the great flow of water that follows working in that direction. Supt.

Staunton will start a drift on a streak of good ore encountered while sinking the winze, and which is some niuety-odd feet above the bottom. It is believed that this will open out into something substantial. In the meantime, shipments from the mine are going forward regularly. Ihe other properties of the company are looking well and turning out their full share of shipping ore. Notice.

During the morning thirteen gave thier heights, ages and measurements, peculiar marks and date ot their stay in the country. Tho explanation that Americans have registration for other reasons not unlike tho one required of them, comforted some of them.

Collector Evster savs that there is one more new phase to the matter. Ho is in receipt of tho following from Collector Hughes, at Santa Fe: Banta Mav 4. 0. C. Eystzh, TacMm: Wire me if rou Iit any Clue applica tion en route.

Am rvquirvd to return certifi cates to ashtngtoa tomorrow A. Hl'SHKS. The certificates in question are in duplicate iu a book hold only by Col lector Hughes, to whom Collector Eva ter makes all reports. As the book had to be returned last night, and as all applications were required to bo entered therein, it appears that the registra tions for Arizona of the past two or three days are void. This amounts to fifty Chinese, and is another penalty for awaiting the eleventh hour.

Blank applications have been forwarded to Tombstone, Benson and Sentinel, that Chinese so desiring may register there before notaries public, under a re. cent ruling ot tho treasury depart- meat. Samuel Huhges, assignee for Hughes Stevens i9 in receipt of a large assortment of garden and other hose. All for "Siico de Mayo." A recent traveler in Mexico tells that at Sau Luis Potosi, several years ago, on the anniversary celebration of "siuco de Mayo" some Mexicans celebrated with frequent indulgence in mescal. They were soon in a very patriotic frame ot mind.

A party of American Btonecutters, very skilled workmen, wero engaged on work for a fine government building of stone going np. In honor of tho day tho stonecutters imbibed in whiskey. Presently the stonecutters and Mexicans came together. "Viva sinco de Mayo!" yelled a Mexican. To with your 'sinco cried a stonecutter.

"Hurrah for the fourth of July!" This was an insult to the Mexican. Out came his dirk, and he started at the American. That individual responded with a six-shooter. He used his weapon first and there was one more Mexican dead for the 5th of May. At this more dirks came out.

So did more six-shooters. It was a very bad affair for the Mexicans, four more of them being killed. The stonecutters knew that the result to them wonld be sudden and early death in the event of their capture, and accordingly made away for El Paso, where all arrived except the man who had shouted for the fourth of July. He was caught and tried, and sentenced to be shot. Then Mexican utilitarian ideas prevailed.

How could the stonecutting on the building go on with the rest of the stonecutters gone? No native workmen wore competent. Why not put the one "gringo" they had loft, and let him finish the work on the building first, and then shoot This was decided upon. A decree was accordingly issued that he should not be shot till he had finished his stonecutting on the building. Today that stonecutter may be seen at work on the building, near the plaza, guarded by a corporal and eight soldiers. He is working, but not hurriedly.

Judging of the stonecutting he has done in the past five years, he will not be shot within the next 250 years. Notice. Tucson, Arizona, May 1, 1893. Francis J. Hbxet, 5t Rochester Ford. Observatory Removal Again. Of the chances for the Warner observatory for Tucson, mentioned by tho Star sonio time when W. A.

Hartt wrote to his friend, Prof. Swift, of tho observatory, there is again slight prospects of its being brought hero. Mr. Hartt was then informed that H. H.

Warner, who furnished the gronnds and building in Rochester for the observatory Prof. Swift furnishing the instruments felt that out of regard for the city of Ro heater he did not care to cause the removal. This was notwithstanding the fact that Rochester has as many cloudy nights a year as Tucson has clear ones. Since then matters financial have changed with Mr. Warner.

He has met severe reverses. Were he now to come down from his platitudes toward the city of Rochester, dv the change he might make about 100.000. This amount represents the difference between the value of the grounds and buildings in Rochester and what an ob servatory might be built for in Tucson. Mr. Hartt expects to again write to Prof.

Swift on tho subject of removal, in view of the change of affairs. Prof. Swift has stated that he would gladly make the removal to Arizona's matchless nights. "Wm. Sie-wert's Confectionery, 215 CONGRESS STREET.
