Had the fire occurred at night it would undoubtedly have been much more serious. A still alarm was sent In at 1 o'clock to the Fire Department, on account of a burning flue in the building occupied Wm. Strubel as a grocery store. The flue burned out without causing any damage. Hugh E. Bayle Says it IB a Sure Thing for Alton. Col. Hugh 13. Baylo, AnslBtant Adjutant General of Illinois, in a conversation with Mr.

Chas. Beall, of this city, Wednesday, said that Alton had been definitely decided on as the location for the State Naval Station. Mr. Boall was In Springfield yesterday and met Col. Bayle, who still has a warm place in his heart for his old home.

According to Col. Bayle, the boat which Is to be the nucleus of the naval station, has already been built in Chicago and that not long ago a trial trip was made on the lake during which Governor Altgeld and staff were on jonrd. The boat is said to be a beauty, 60 feet long with a draught of four feet and.having triple expansion engines. Col. Baylo said that ho will be here next week to reorganize tho Morrell Guards to select therefrom a crew of -wenty young men to man the boat, ieside the crow there will bo a commander, pilot and engineer.

Mr. Beall states that Mr. 2. B. Job, was favorably mentioned as a suitable person for commander.

The establishment of the naval stations here by the state is an event that has been talked of for some time and anxiously looked forward to by a number of young men. The late Senator Herb introduced a bill to the legislature at its last session to secure the station for Alton and spared neither time or trouble in working the matter up. Just Recived. Mr. Walton Kutledge received a telegram last evening announcing the death of Mr. John Minto, at'Pana, 111. Mr. Minto'e death was very sudden, as he had not suffered any previous illness.

He formerly resided at North Alton and is remembered by all the old residents as being one of the first settlers of North Alto.n. He was about 68 years of age and spent many years of his life in this vicinity. He was a brother of Mrs. Walton Rutledge. Mrs.

Sotier's. Conrad Beck's Death. A jury was impaneled last evening t) inquire into the death of Conrad Beck, who committed suicide by hang, ing himself yesterday morning. The jury rendered a verdict according to the facts published in the TELBOHAPU yesterday. The funeral of Mr.

O. F. Entertainment. The entertainment and dance by Western Star and Qermania Lodges at Turner Hall, last evoning, was fairly well attended, and what was lacking in numbers was mado up in amount of amusement famished. Dancing was indulged in till an early hour this morning.
