THE JOURNAL NEWS, SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 11, W79 China visit only for the serious traveler Americans are managing to squeeze through the narrowly opened dHr to the Fjst they jam into the country's existing hotels and guest houses They put ill) with dreadful aecoiimiiHlations and an unrelenting pace of sightseeing, exotic f(xl and sweltering heat and in most cases seem to ehei ir every moment ol it China is not a place here one would consider taking a vacation a place lo relax and get away from it all, China is best summed up as an experience. Yet it is not an experience for everyone It is expensive, and it is physically demanding. Even an economy package tour can cost over $3,000, and there are few lo satisfy those who want to see China on a first-class basis. The pace under complete control of the Chinese once the border is crossed is so physically demanding that some tourists have died from exhaustion, a resident wire service correspondent here said. Yet, for those who have the stamina, the money and the desire, it is a trip well worth taking.

Before you even call your travel agent to put your name on the long waiting list of applicants fur visas, you can start preparing for your trip to (Tuna. The Chinese seem to feel that anyone interested enough in a country to travel hallway around'the world would at least take the tune to that country Therelore. it is (vest to know a liltle hisloiy and back ground More you grt here One of the best pl.iees to start is with the JAl. i.l.ip.in Air Lint'M Guide to the People Itcpiitilic of China On page of the JAl. liiiide is a tiavelct vocabulary Knowing a ol Chinese is more than just tun.

in many cases, it is a downright necessity Some devotion to learning as much Chinese as possible is strongly recommended While the government is currently stressing English as the second language in the PKC. ami a growing numlier ol people speak it, it is not widespread You only have lo be isolated from your interpreter once to discover just how important even a limited Chinese vocabulary can be. When youie scedmg down a crowded Peking street in a Chinese taxi ami the driver makes a wning turn, it's nice to be able to get him back on course lie may understand enough Knglish to take you to Ihe Peking Hotel, but if that isn't your destination, you can be in real trouble Just as important as preparing mentally for the trip is preparing lor it physically A clinil) to the top ol Ihe (ileal Wall is worth the trip, but only if you're able lo live long enough to tell about it. Most guidebooks suggest you prepare for the Great Wall ahead of time by taking long walks. They also suggest you take the lime lo purchase and hie.ik in a giHHl pair of walking shoes ll.illi are suggestions worth heeding The guidebook also sug gests bring about half as much clothing as you normally pack and twice as much money Again, I hey a ren I bad suggestions The Chinese have no great love altair with clothing, as do Americans A conservative sport shirt and slacks for a man and similar appal el lor a woman is sullicient to go anywhere in China, including most of the elaborate banquets you might attend The problem with spend ing money in China is that most people have a ditlicull time deciding when lo slop Since most Americans don't expect to make a return trip, they want lo buy they can the first lime While there are many bargains in the PKC, some ol them are still expensive.

Once you arrive in China, you may get Ihe leeling that someone has turned back the clock by 30 or 40 years The oxcarts, bicycles and automobiles all seem out of place in lll'tf The airplanes, many of them propeller-driven and Soviyt made, lack air conditioning and leg room It is common for the temperature lo soar well past 100 degrees while passengers are awaiting t.ikeoll The hotels and guest houses, many dating from before World War II, have changed little By STEVE WILSON Gannett Newt Service I'KKING As you drive along the narrow highway from Peking toward the rising mountains of northern China, you begin to get your first glimpses of it. First, hiyh up to the west, then to the east It is what's left of China's Great Wall. It is a man-made structure so enormous that astronauts have viewed it from outer space, yet relatively few Americans have had the chance to see it, to walk on it. to experience it. The Chinese, opening their doors to Americans now after nearly three trying to change all that.

This country, historically enchanting, mysterious anil frequently forbidden to outsiders, is preparing to embrace the tourist industry an industry that may he one of its greatest assets in its attempt toward modernization, Hut the preparation isn't coming easily nor rapidly. The American tourist may well be ready to visit the People's Republic, but the People's Kepublic, for the time being at least, isn't all that ready for the American tourist. The country's limited hotel rooms already are booked for more than a year, and there is widespread confusion over how fast new motels will be built, where they will be built and who will build them. While Western-style hotels have been built by foreign companies, the government travel service said the PKC now wants to rely on its own efforts. At attractions like the Great Wall or the Ming Tombs, the parking lots are built to accommodate only a fraction of the buses and automobiles that some day may flood them.

Even then, workers dry grain on portions of the lots, and much of the rest goes unused. Souvenir shops are small, rest room facilities are all but nonexistent and refreshment stands serve warm beer and orange soda. Still, more and more The Great Wall of China remains the top attraction. llSfe MMM i ft' rfffff t' il 1 BU li EH III The Perillo-Griffith Team III 119 tin is arm i Working together at Perillo-Griffith can be fun, but we take our service to you very seriously.
