THE JOURNAL-NEWS, THURSDAY, JANUARY 30, 1975 5A people in the news Presley enters Memphis hospita Meanwhile, the Memphis Commercial Appeal quoted a Presley source as saying the singer has a liver worried about his appearance and weight. The newspaper said doctors are also checking to see what effect an injection of steroids combined with acupuncture might have had on the entertainer. The source said Presley underwent such a treatment on the West Coast because of a pain in his arms. -vf I -Dill "Elvis has a liver problem that has nothing to do with alcohol. Elvis does not drink.

The purpose of the hospital stay is to try and diagnose the nature of the ailment," the newspaper quoted the unidentified source as saying. MEMPHIS, Elvis Presley, who reportedly is concerned about a weight problem, has been hospitalized for what is described as several days of tests. Maurice Elliott, vice president of Memphis Baptist Hospital, said details on tests or treatments planned for Presley were not known. Presley was ushered into a suite on the 18th floor about 4 a.m. Wednesday, but there was no explanation of whether the timing was because of illness or an attempt to avoid publicity, "We don't have much information, Elliott said.

"His physician told me Presley will be in the hospital for several days for a general medical workup, but nothing more." Elliott said there might be a further report today from Presley's physician, Dr. George Nichopoulos. The paper also said Presley's last stay at Baptist Hospital in June of 1973 was not to treat pleurisy, as then reported, but was related to the liver problem. Presley spent 18 days at the hospital in late October and November of 1973 to recuperate from what was described as a bout with pneumonia. Presley's present agenda calls for him to open a two-week engagement at a Las Vegas hotel on March 18, to be followed by a 12-day tour starting April 26.

The final stop is scheduled for May 5 at Jackson, where Presley is to do a benefit for victims of a Jan. 10 tornado that struck Mc-Comb, Miss. AP photo The newspaper said its source stated that one effect of the ailment was a swelling or puffiness in the face. Presley turned 40 on Jan. 8, but did not make public appearances at the time.

(AP) A parade of pupils has testified at an appeal hearing that they still respect a high school teacher who was fired after posing nude for a magazine. A final decision on the dismissal of Lou Zivkovich, a physical education instructor at Victor Valley High School, went to a three-member panel on professional conduct. The panel is expected to make a decision within three weeks.

Supt. William A. Tarr of the Victor Valley Joint Union High School District said Zivkovich was dismissed because he failed to set a good example for his "pupils. However, 17 pupils and teachers testified Wednesday that they did not lose their respect for Zivkovich following his appearance in the centerfold of the June 1974 issue of Playgirl, and that he did not lose his effectiveness as an instructor. Zivkovich's attorney argued the case must be decided solely on whether his client's nude appearance had any effect on his job as a teacher.

During a telephone call, Theodore and Leach assured themselves they were father and son. The daughters, all married and residents of this area, are Ann Noville, 27, mother of two; Moranette Finch, 25, mother of three; and Suzette Schultz, 21, mother of three. The two older daughters said they have vague memories of their father, but Suzette says she has no recollection of him. The story told how Leach, a saddle maker by trade, had spent nearly 10 years in prison for manslaughter. During his last three years, he worked to help Allison's son, Keary, then 5, who had been hospitalized for skin grafts to repair burn scars on his neck and chin following a camping accident.

Leach, now living with the Allison family, told his son he plans to open a leather-craft shop in the Oakland area. He said he hopes to come here later to see his family. (AP) Ten male students are pledging the Alpha Lambda Epsilon sorority at Olivet College. "We thought we needed some drastic changes and that's about as drastic as you can get," says sorority president Noel Diehl, a 21-year-old junior from Mount Clemens, Mich. Miss Diehl says several of the men were tired of the hazing and purely social activities of the campus's three fraternities and offered to join service-oriented Alpha Lambda Epsilon. One, Tom Mayo, a 19-year-old sophomore from Hastings, said the possibility that Alpha Lambda Epsilon wouldn't be able to keep up payments on its house was what first attracted him and four friends to the sorority. Seven of sorority's 12 active members graduate in the spring.

Under college rules governing all student residences, the men won't be able to live in the house and can't stay past 11 p.m. on weekdays or 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Sharon Panchuk, a 19-year old freshman from Detroit, said the men seemed to be pledging Alpha Lambda Epsilon for the same reason she is because the group is making a concerted effort to return to following its char-j ter as a literary and service group. "I really don't have any apprehensions at all," she said.
