RYTHER Hopper House exhibit Watercolors by James Tanaka Continued from 3 Recent watercolors by James Tanaka, a resident of musicians in performance. Tanaka's works are noted for their unusual forms and colors.

Though he works in a variety of mediums, he has expressed a preference for watercolor because he feels that the medium's spontaneity best suits his temperament. Palisades, are being exhibited at Hopper House beginning Sunday, with an opening reception scheduled that day from 1 to 5 p.m. Hopper House is located at 82 No. Broadway, Nyack. The exhibit will be highlighted by scenes from the artist's trip to India a year ago, and studies of jazz in a marriage to another artist.

She was married to the well-known artist, Morris Kantor. Ms. Ryther continued to produce a prolific body of work during her lifetime, with growing recognition taking place since her death. She is to be the subject of a forthcoming article in "The Woman's Art Journal," and buyers continue to compete for her rare works on glass. A retrospective exhibition of Ms.

Ryther's work at the arts center in 1982 met with great critical success. The present exhibit is largely composed of works not previously exhibited in the county and includes early gouaches done in the years following her study with Prendergast. Also in the exhibition are drawings from the model done in New York and Paris in the 1920s, and watercolors of Paris parks, and Spanish Italian vistas from her travels during those same years. Also a part of the exhibit includes scenes from Rockland's pre-suburban days, as well as historically significant paintings of artists' gatherings on South Mountain Road. "Given the unique qualities of Martha Ryther's work," writes Martica Sawin, an art historian residing in West Nyack, "both the paintings on glass for which she is well-known and the earlier, lesser known works on paper, she is certain to be the subject of growing attention." The tax-deductible donation for Saturday's preview is $7.50 per person.

To request an invitation, contact the arts center at its West Nyack address. Following Sunday's opening, the Martha Ryther exhibit can be viewed Mondays through Saturdays from 1 to 4 p.m., and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. through Nov. 11. "I was tremendously excited by the colors I saw on my visit to India last year," he says, "particularly the colors and patterns of the fabrics that the women wear," His month-long tour took him to many cities, including Bombay, Madras, Nepal and Bangalore.

His impressions of the tour included the sight of thousands of pilgrims who came to the Ganges River every day to wash their clothes and bathe in the sacred waters. After growing up in Los Angeles, Tanaka studied at Pratt Institute and the Art Students League, where he studied with Rico Lebrun and Rene Bouche. He also studied with Fumio Kitaoka, a leading block artist of Jap an. Tanaka's works are to be found in many leading private collections, as well as in the permanent collections of McGraw-Hill, Art Museum of the University of Michigan, and the Rockland Center for the Arts. He has exhibited in the Pepsi-Cola Asian Invitational and the Third World Revolution in Art Exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The exhibit runs through Nov. 18. It can be viewed on Fridays from 12 noon to 4 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundatys from 1 to 4 p.m Special plwto-lawronco Hoyl Jr. James Tanaka in his Palisades studio..
