Solution of the knotty relief problem was in prospect tonight after a new exchange of views by President Hoover and senate Democratic leaders over the dispute which has threatened an extra session of congress. President Hoover, in a statement to the press, emphatically declared against the $25,000.000 Red Cross relief appropriation demanded by the Democrats, asserting that it struck "at the very roots of self government." pledge given by the president in his statement that he would employ every resource of the government to prevent suffering, if other agencies failed, brought an immediate response from the determined Democrats. Senator Harrison, (Dem went before the senate with President Hoover's declaration of policy on relief and proposed a compromise on the $25.000.000 fund wjiich he said came within the scope of the presidential policy. He suggested that this fund be made available during the approaching rune months recess of congress with the understanding that it was to be used only in the event charitable and local institutions were unable to extend adequate relief. A $15,000,000 "reserve fund" guarded with the language suggested by Harrison is now the basis of compromise negotiations and will be put up to the president tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the senate permitted consideration of a conference report on the deficiency appropriation measure and began consideration of another appropriation bill which must be pased before the March 4 adournment to avoid an extra session. "I am not at all without hope that the extra session can be avoided," said. Senator Watson of Indiana, the Republican leader, at the end of the day. FRENCH BUILD SEAPLANE FOR ATLANTIC MAIL ROUTE Paris new all-metal monoplane with a range of nearly 2,800 miles, fully loaded, has been completed for transatlantic air mail service. The ship, which will carry a pay load of 1,102 pounds, was built for the French transport company, Compagnie Generale Aeropostale, which contemplates crossing the sputh Atlantic between Africa and Brazil.

It has a wing span -of nearly 103 feet and is powered with two motors, mounted in tandem style. The hall, entirely of metal, is nearly SO feet long and is divided into five compartments for baggage, mechanic's, and control rooms. CLUB LICENSES 251 PILOTS Sydney, Australia fA.P.)—Tlie Aero club of New South Wales, since inauguration of a training course for pilots in August, 1926, has issued 251 licenses. Club planes have carried 9,242 passengers, made "67,771 flights and A little more than four weeks remain for Indiana high school coaches to get their teams peak of conditon for the state tournament. The sectionals are scheduled for the first week end in March.

Remember this in picking your favorite to cop the title this year consistency in performance -means much. The team that can play good ball at all times has more chance to win the big meet than the team that beats a champion one night and loses to a dub the next night. It is a long grind through the three weeks of elimination be fore tlie champion is finally crowned. From three to four games are required in the sec tional play, two games in the re gional tourney and four in the state finals. That means a team must make no mistakes for a mistake is fatal in tournaments Last year Washington won the state title after a season marked by only one defeat.

That same consistency has characterized the team this year. The Hatch ets are not generally being picked to win the title again however. They have lost two games to Frankfort this season and another in a tournament to Bedford. The Bedford blot on the record has been erased with two subsequent victories over the Stonecutters. In the last game Bedford failed to make a single field goal.

Frankfort is still the outstanding favorite for the championship this year. The Hot Dogs have one defeat only marked up against them. That was administered by Muncie but the Bearcats have lost two other games to Frankfort- this season. Coach Case has a squad of veterans at Frankfort. Muncie, a "dark horse" that has been playing rather inconsistent ball, had won from strong teams and lost to others that seemed inferior.

The latest blunder was the loss of a game to Marion last Saturday night by a 26-24 count. Logansport and Newcastle have also marked up wins against Muncie. Newcastle is another inconsistent performer. The Trojans have always had a good game in their system which allowed them to knock off one the top notchers some time during the season. One year it was Frankfort.

This year it was Muncie Newcastle entertains Frankfort Friday night and the fans will watch closely to see what happens. The Washington Vincennes game Friday night will bring two old time rivals into conflct. These two teams have much to scrap about on the hardwood. Among other things Washington fans blame Vincennes for the IHSAA investigation that resulted in Hart being declared ineligible. Another grudge game will be staged Friday night in Greencastle when Brazil comes to that floor.

Brazil won the first encounter this season and has since added to its prestige by defeating Vincennes. On the other hand Greencastle has just tumed in victories over Delphi and Bloomington. At Connersville the annual Rushville Connersville tilt will be staged. Connersville won the first encounter of the season but that doesn't mean anythng to Rushville -whose hopes rise Bill Newbold Leads Notre Dame to Win Over Indiana Five Bloomiugton, Feb.
