He fills a vacancy created by the death of E. V. McGinnis of Albia. Re-elected, were the following local men as officers and directors: Carl VanZante, vice president; Earl Boyer, secretary; Ralph Spencer, treasurer; and Lloyd Brown, director.

Other officers and directors named were: Howard Vincent, Russell, president; John Knowles, Melrose, director; R. E. Noble, Corydon, director, and Cecil E. Hawkins, Russell, director. The local organization covers several counties in this area.

David Thompson, retired E. U. B. minister, and former pastor here, left the Ottumwa hospital Monday following a major operation. Rev.

Thompson is in his 88th year and it is remarkable that at his advanced age he withstood such U. S. HIATT OBSERVES 85TH BIRTHDAY U. S. Hiatt observed his 85th birthday anniversary Thursday with all his children home for the day but a daughter, Ruth Wetson at Longview, Wash.

The day was spent very happily together. Thoes present were his daughters, Mrs. Mabry Taylor and Mr. Taylor of Leroy, Mrs. Clell Davis and Mr.

Davis of Spring Valley, Mrs. Harold Hudgeus and Mr. Hudgens and Gary, and the five sons, ptha, Gus, Ernest, Paul and Kenneth and their families. Also Mr. and Mrs.

Clair McDanel and children. Mr. Hiatt lives alone since the death of his wife two years ago. He has lived all his life in the Hiattsville vicinity and in Moravia the last several years. REBEKAHS PLAN FOR FOOD AND BAKE SALE Monday evening at the regular meeting of the Rebekah lodge, the September committee told of plans for a bake sale to be held Sept.

18 at the Spencer store. Every member is asked to participate in getting food to the committee by 10:30. Christmas cards were distributed. Mrs. Roscoe Pennington was appointed to prepare an article on the 'founding of Rebekah 103 years ago, for the Sept.

and Mrs. Bernard Neff of Champaign, 111., are the parents of a daughter, weighing 6 pounds and 4 ounces born Sept. 9. Mrs. Flora Jones is the great grandmother, and Mr.

and Mrs. Bayard Neff of Roekford, 111., are the grandparents, this being their first grandchild. Mr. and Mrs. J.

L. Dougan of Hamburg are the proud parents of a daughter born Tuesday, Sept. 7. She weighed 7 pounds and 10 ounces at birth, and has been named Naomi Kay, Mrs. Dougan will be remembered here as Miss Mary Roberts, a former instructor in the local schools.

MAIN COUSINS MEET AT BEN JONES HOME A happy gathering of Main cousins, was held Monday at the farm home of Ben and Louisa CHRISMAN REUNION HELD AT MORAVIA PARK The annual Chrisman family reunion was held Sunday at the Moravia park. A basket dinner was enjoyed at noon by all attending. During the business meeting in the afternoon new officers were elected and are: Fay Underwood, president; Mrs. Hugh Crawley, vice president; Mrs. Don McDivitt, secretary-treasurer.

The 1955 reunion date has been set for the second Sunday in September and at the Moravia park. Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Moore and Dee and Danny of Mt. Pleasant; Mrs.

Clara Crawley and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hammond, Moravia; Mrs. Louis Caligueri and Louis, Frances, Margaret and Theresa, Mr. and Mrs.

2:00 p.m., Program and worship service. We extend a welcome to each and every one to attend our homecoming day. DR. AUDLEY L. SMITH DIES IN FLORIDA Er.

Audley L. Smith. 56, of West Palm Beach, Florida, died Friday following a long illness. He was the son of U. G.

and Pearl Smith, publishers of the Moravia Union from 1914 to 1923. He was graduated from the Moravia high school with the class of 1910. His death is reported as the first of the members of that class. Following his graduation from high school, he went to Washington, D. where he was graduated from George Washington University.

He then became a professor of English literature in that university and continued in that work for 22 years, until failing health caused his retirement seven years ago. Dr. Smith received his PhD degree in 1937 from Johns Hopkins University. Surviving are the wife, Mrs. Lorna W.

Smith, West Palm Beach; a daughter, Mrs. C. Albert Stahl, Detroit, a brother, Dr. Carroll N. Smith of Orlando, Florida, a sister, Miss Ardis A.

Smith, Detroit, and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held at West Palm Beach, Florida, Saturday. Burial was at Syracuse, New York. WALTERS LEASE HATCHERY FROM MARVIN GARDNERS Announcement is made in this week's Union of the leasing of the Gardner Hatchery. Mr.

and Mrs. Maurice Walter have leased the interests of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Gardner in the hatchery for a period of one year. Gardners and Walters have been partners in the business for several years.

E. Palmer. Alumni Picnic Held At Moravia Park The fourth annual alumni picnic was held in the Moravia park Sunday, Sept. 12. Twenty-three classes were represented.

George Firkins, from the class of 1907, was the oldest class represented. The classes of 1927 and 1930 tied for having the most graduates present. Following a delicious basket dinner, a short business meeting was held when Harold Mason was elected president and Merle Smith Vice president. Committee named for next year was Mr. and Mrs.

Clarence Whitehead, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Dooley, Mrs. Theo Miller and Mrs. Garnet McDonough.

In charge of this year's reunion were Mr. and Mrs. Merle Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Brooks and Mr.

and Mrs. Doyle Hampton. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. C.

HAPPY HELPERS 4-H CLUB MEETS TUESDAY NIGHT The regular meeting of the Happy Helpers 4-H dub was held at the home of Martha McCord on Tuesday, Sept. 14. The meeting was called to order at 8 p.m.

Rain early in the three-day event gave way to fair and warmer weather. Effects of the drouth was felt as the number of entries in the horticultural division dropped considerably.

However, in home arts and other departments were well filled to the point where the total entries were very close to previous festivals. Children's parade was most noticeably increased with a very large number of entries. Friday's parade was about its usual size. Entertainment throughout the three days was varied, R.E.A. and the Farm Bureau furnishing Thursday's R.E.A.

The proceeds are to go toward the purchase of a coffee maker for the chapter. All members are urged to take part in the project. During the social hour refreshments of cookies, mints and coffee were served by the committee, Mrs. Chet Broshar and Mr. and Mrs.
