THURSDAY, MAY 12, 1955 ALTON EVENING TELEGRAPH PAGE SEVENTEEN GRAND OPENING of National Food Center store In Wood River has been set for Tuesday at 9 a. The store, tenth to be opened by the company this year is located at 337 East Ferguson Ave. National Food Center To Open Wood River Store WOOD RIVER The grand opening of ttie tenth National Food Center Store to be launch- this year was announced today by H. Sievert, branch manager of National Food Center Stores, Inc. of St.

Louis. This opening will take place Tuesday at 9 a. m. at 337 E. Ferguson Ave.

National Food Center chain announced an 11 store expansion program in March of last year. This ctore will be the tenth opened since then. The budding has approximately 11,000 fequare feet of floor space, most of which is devoted to area. It is has strip-fluorescent lights Bnd automatic doors. The general contractor and owner is Irving Goldfarh.

The exterior and parking lot will be illuminated wilh mercury-vapor lamps. Six check-out- counfers, ultra-modern food handling equipment and other facilities have been installed present handling of perishables lor self-service selection. The meat department will be 100 per cent self-service. Other out-of-the-ordinary departments will behousehold needs, beauty needs, and medicine cabinet supplies. This store will also have an office for the collection of gas, electric and telephone bills and for the issuance of money orders.

The cutting and packaging rooms are air-conditioned. Space for approximately 50 cars has been set aside for customer parking. Harold Balm of 603 W. Main Staunlon, will be manager of the store and Ray Gfirby of 4197 Vine, Granite City, will be market manager. Other personnel will be residents of the Granite City area.

Registration Tuesday WOOD RIVER September first -graders will be given a second opportunity to enroll for the fall term at St. Bernard's Catholic School Tuesday, between me hours of 9 a. m. and noon, Mother Angela announced today. Registrations were schtduled for Tuesday of this week, but less than half on the expected enrollment made appearance.

Runner-up for the award was Robert Zacny of 825 Madison Ave. Both students are now eligible to compete for the School Medal Award Scholarship by writing an essay for state competition on how the "American Legion Can Best Serve the Community." First and second place winners in the state contest will receive $600 and $300, respectively.

Only boyg were considered for the high school award, which is being presented for the first time this year. Considered in making the selections were honor, courage, scholarhip, leadership and service. The school awards find essay contest winners at Lewis Clark School and St. Bernard's Catholic School will be announced at the commencement exercises May 27. The elementary school essays concern the biography of some great American who has been distinguished in the past or present.

Members of the faculty believe if he completes -the duties of his office through next pear he will have been the first student in the school to have headed his class through their four years of study. Police Swamped Short Circuit Sets Off Bank Alarm System at Wood River WOOD RIVER Wood River police were being beset witii telephone calls this morning by wanting to know whether or not $200,000 been taken by burglars at First National Bank shortly after 5 a. m.

today when the bank burglar alarm began to sound. The alarm, working of which were not divulged by either police or bank officials who contended that too much Information on the subject might be injudicious, began to moan and howl at 5:35 m. Two police vehicles carrying policemen arrived at the bank building at 5:36 a. according to police records. Police searched the exterior of the building, could find no footprints on vestibules or window sills nor could any open places be found.

George G. Guker, president of the bank, arrived a few minutes later. Closer inspection with Guker's aid indicated that (lie alarm system, still sounding vigorously, had been set off by a short electric circuit induced by the wet weather. Clumps of residents began to gather at a safe distance outside the bank building and Guker announced that some of the hue and cry, at least, would end ly because the alarm system was set to operate for a specified number of minutes, then stop. The noise stopped on schedule and a general relaxing followed.

The posters were judged in Jiree classes with the first place winner in each class to entered in the state competition.

Judges considered appeal, artis- ability, originality and neatness of the work in selecting the most excellent. In the first class of fourth, fifth and sixth graders Mike Lewis Clark School won first place; Catherine Anderson of the Rosewood School, secone place, and Marilyn Lamarsh Lewis Clark School, third, with Bob Borman's poster receiving honorable mention.
