HC THE JOURNAL-NEWS, THURSDAY, JULY 13, 1972 Rafs! Some more scene-sfeolers IF YOU WANT REALLY LOW 'TAR' AND REALLY FULL FLAVORJHEN IS REALLY FOR YOU. JACK O'BRIAN Q0 LUCKY TEN Warning: The Surgeon General Has That Cigarette Smoking Is Dangerous to "William Powell and Myrna Loy frankly admitted that in their 'Thin Man' series they were more than once upstaged by the little wire-haired terrier who played Powell, who is a rather cultivated easy going guy, admitted he got a little upset when the dog's owner -trainer insisted the pooch get equal billing when appearing with him and Miss Loy. "Powell said at the time: 'I'll share billing with the hound as soon as you produce figures to show me how many dogs purchase movie tickets each That ended the argument. "The idea of working with a gang of rats held no great allure for me and I told the production company this when they approached me with the idea. The producer explained that not only were the rats friendly, they were downright lovable.

Later events proved he was right. The animal trainer on the movie, Moe Di Sesso, assured me that the rats were just as friendly and even tempered as pabbits except when hungry. "I had to take Moe's word for it at first but later discovered he was right. They were friendly little rascals and I assumed they were always well always brought along a few jars to make sure they did not crave other delicacies when I was working with them. "I think when Bing Crosby Productions made 'Willard' they launched a horde of horror films in which animals would be involved.

No one figures a movie 'starring' thousands of rats would be great boxoffice material, but the success of the picture proved them wrong. of course, was a natural sequel and, despite my squeamishness at first. I was pleased to appear in it. "The star of the film is and you would not believe what this little rodent thespian can He plays piano, sings, whistles and can do a buck and wing that even Fred Astaire might envy. "Actually 'Ben' was extremely popular with every person in the cast, including the girls.

Meredith Baxter and Rosemary Murphy liked him so much they tried to adopt him, but Moe DiSesso, the trainer said nothing doing. 'Ben' is a very valuable property. He is currently resting up from his cinematic choes at Moe's house awaiting a phone call from his agent that will get him back into the picture business." ONLY "Most actors will tell you that they do not like to appear in movies with two rivals children and animals," said Joe. "Both, they claim, are natural scene stealers and to some degree they are right. I would hate to appear in movie or television productions with Lassie because she (or he) would monopolize the screen.

Even a star like Elizabeth Taylor mentioned that the beautiful Collie got more attention when they were in a film together. "Johnny Weissmuller used to complain that in the series of 'Tarzan' pictures that he made, there was absolutely no chance to show any acting ability because the various animals present especially the chimps were natural scene stealers. Johnny said this did not bother him particularly because he never considered himself a threat to Sir Laurence Olivier, but it did upset co-star Maureen O'Sullivan, who was proud of her justifiable acting talents. Best TV Hanged Kid Curry." (Repeat) This 90-minute entry may be a bit over-long, but the late Peter Duel's amiable portrayal of Hannibal Heyes; Walter Brennan's impersonation of an old woman (completely done up in drag); and Robert Morse's attempt at playing a western role; spark the show. Morse pretends he's Kid Curry and when a judge sentences him to hang, the real Kid (Ben Murphy) and his sidekick (Duel) show up to set the bogus records straight. It all gets complicated and kinky but fans will probably go along. 8:00 9:00 CD Evening at Pops. Doc Severinsen, known best to the TV audience of Johnny Carson's Tonight Show musical director, is conductor Arthur Fiedler's special guest tonight.

In his delightfully splashy role of virtuoso trumpet player and fancy costume artist, Severinsen will entertain you as soloist for velock's "Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra," and Ba-charach's "Goin' Out of My Head." 9:00 10:00 CD Hollywood Television Theater. "The Police." (Repeat). A mad wild, broad satire on a fictitious country, that's so dehumanized by its law-and order restraints, it reduces thought to double-think and double-talk absurdity. A' black comedy which probably could only have been written by a play, wright who has personally experienced iife in a dictatorship, its author is Slawomir Mrojek, a Polish expatriate now living in Paris. Fred Gwynne gives an outstanding performance as the hero-victim of the piece, a police sergeant who is forced by his excessive loyalty to the regime, to become its major scapegoat.

The whole cast of this exercise in dialatical (Murray Hamilton as the police chief, John McGiver as the General and Bob Dishy as the last revolutionary) Is fine. 11:30 Movie "Room Service." One of the best for fans of the Brothers Marx. Groucho as a penniless theatrical producer trying for a fast buck and getting fast laughs is incredible to watch. The sharp, satiric humour of the foursome has never seemed less dated than in this 1938 vintage movie, and their unspoken message to sit back and laugh at ourselves has never been more apt or more welcome.
