"When ladies come to this office to buy old papers, it isn't necessary to say that they want them to put on 'pantry We understand your wants, ladies, and won't annoy you by improper questions." INJUNCTION ino'iou to dissolve an injunction was argued at Belleville, on Friday last, before Judge Snydcr, by Judge Baker and Hon. Levi of this city. The facts in the case are these: Mr. Dausman, of the firm of Daysman, tobacco manufacturers of Louis, sold his interest in the business to Mr. Myers, of this city.

Mr. Duusman afterwards went into partnership in the same business with Mr. Druramond, at this point, and continued to use the old trademark of Leggett enjoined by Leggett Myers. The motion to dissolve was denied. PUKE English technical periodical points out an easy way for testing whether water is good and fit for general use.

It says: "Good water should be free from color, unpleasant odor and taste, and should quickly afford a lather with a small portion of soap. If half a pint of water be placed in a perfectly clean, colorless glass- stoppered bottle, a few grains of the best white lump sugar added and the bcllle free, ly exposed to the daylight in the window of a warm room, the liquid should not. become turbid, even after exposure for a week or ten flays. If the water becomes turbid, it is open to grave suspicion of sewerage contamination; but if it remains clear it is almost certainly safe. We owe to Heisch this simple, valuable, but hitherto strangely neglected test.

SUMMEKVILLK, Aug. 2, 1873. EJilars Telegraph: On Wednesday, July 301h, many hearts were made sad by hearing of the death of Mr. Robert Carter, an old settler of this place and Macoupin county, who died of heart disease. As the news of his death spread through the neighborhood, the ei pression of all was: "He was a good man, yes, and a good citizen and Christian.

Mr. Robert Carter was born in Yorkshire, England, July 18th, 180G. And at the age of twenty-four he emigrated to this country, and worked in Cincinnati for a short time as a carpenter, and in 1834 he came to this county (Macoupin) and located near Chesterfield, where he lived for some time, after which he removed near this place. In 1834 he was married to one Miss Whitlaker, and in 1843 he was left a widower with two children, John and Josseph, who are still living. After remaining a widower for about two years, he was again married to Miss Ann Thompson, his present wife, and were three children added to them.

Robert, who lives near Chesterfield; Elizabeth who is dead; William who lives at home with his mother, In 1854 Mr. C. united with the Summerville Baptist Church, and in a few years after, he was elected as deacon of the said church, where he remained faithful till the Good Master called him to the church above to receive his reward. The funeral services took place in the Baptist Church on the following Saturday, conducted by the Rer. Simeon Hussey, assisted by Reverends Chilton and Carson, after which he was taken to Chesterfield for Hatheway, (4).

Clifford, Coppinger, Xoo- nan, M'Pike and Whitehcad, (U). The said ordinance and resolution, as originally offered, were then passed. Mr. M'Pike also offered the following resolution, which was adopted, to-wit: Whereas, The Revenue of the City of Alton last year, as shown before the City Court by one statement was over 5102,000 and by the other statement over 5103,000. Whereas, It is confidently stated that the whole of said sum has been exhausted, and Wlifreat, A rigid public economy as to all the city expenditures is demanded and should be enforced, and the more necessary if the lost above claim be true, to the end that taxation be reduced, and Whereas, The Revenue Ordinance first passed for the year 1S73, amply provides for every department, and gives to the Board of Comptrol S3.5SO more than last year, out of a revenue of only S71.K14 00, being $31,000 less than last year; that the revenue asked last year on real and personal property was 582,571 00, while this year is asked only such tax for 1873; therefore be it Resolved, That the careless and culpably destructive rather want of voting small sums to innumerable small demands without examination, purpose, or plan saps at once the revenue without accomplishing material ends, and should in so far as possible cease.

Resolved, That solid Improvements most necessary to the business interesls of the city, demand our first attention, and that we adhere to such policy, being as determined to bring au-eipenuuurea mmta me amount of our actual revenue as we are to uave Buiuc iiciiuancnt improvements made out of each annual assessment. Resolved, That this Council appreciating the economy of paying cash for all demands intend to inaugurate the system of "cash payment" as soon as it is possible to do so, in lieu of issuing orders.
