"The whole thing is such a snarl of garbled communications at this point that I don't think anything has been handled very well on anyone's part." Asked about the U.S. federation's refusal to post the bond requested by Belgrade authorities, Edmondson replied: "It's difficult to refuse an illegal demand. We don't recognize that there was such a demand." But the history of the epic raid will always be remembered in the archives of America. The actual date was April 18, 1942, almost five months after the Japanese had pulled their surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, and the nation's morale was still at an all-time low. President Franklin Roosevelt needed to bolster the American spirit, and a blow to the heart of the enemy's homeland wasN the key. Lt. Gen.

James H. Doolittle, Army Air Corps leader, was assigned the job of training the 80 volunteers, and planning and executing the raid. It was a bold one, never before attempted. Logistics alone were devastating. Maximum range of the medium-size bombers was several hundred miles short of the distance for a safe return.

A land launching from China was originally planned, then discarded In favor of a carrier, based operation. The carrier Hornet was selected and became the famous Shangri La base. The plan was to bring the Hornet to within 500 miles of the Japanese coast, and then the 16 Mitchell bombers would take off and fan out for their five target points: Tokyo, Yokohoma, Yokosuka, Nagoya and Kobe. When the ships were 650 miles from land, a Japanese patrol boat spotted them. The boat was sunk, but rather than risk detection by a radio message from the boat, the raid was started 10 hours ahead of time in gigantic seas.

The men were told that the increased range 800 miles would not allow them to return to the Hornet after the attack. They would be on their own and would have to make their way back to friendly land without aid. They were given the opportunity to back down. No one did. Flying low at near wave-cap height to avoid detection, they have you try it.

More important, despite the assurances of the Japanese government to their people that the attack was of no consequence, the people's morale was shattered.
