Charles Champlin, the host on tonight's "Film Odyssey," has this to say about Lang's early creation: "Although Fritz Lang's classic motion picture was made more than 40 years ago, it is just as exciting as it was 1931 when it was introduced to a stunned film audience. "In this tale of a child murderer and the efforts of police and Berlin's criminal elements to apprehend him, Lang gives us what we can cadi a textbook demonstration of sus-penseful story-telling, cutting between the pursuers, the Imperiled children and the killer pursuing or pursued, to generate tremendous tension.

"Not the least among the excitements of 'M' is the way Lang suggests rather then shows the actual murders, letting the violence take place in me viewers' minds." Berlin's underworld and beggars' organization are prominently featured by the German director. "Lang gives us a remarkably broad and detailed look at the Berlin of 1930," says Champlin, "from the dens of the underworld to the quiet neighborhoods of ordinary folk, to the police themselves.
