Please send any questions, wmments or Information to "History Notebook." c-o The Journal-News, Hudson Nyack. Orangetown Resolutions Last week we initiated the first in a series of stories relating to Rockland County's part In the War for Independence from Great Britain. In each succeeding column we will give details of specific incidents in the various towns and villages.

This is geared toward promoting local interest in a bicentennial celebration of the Declaration of Independence In 1976. On the national and state levels celebrations are being planned, hopefully to outdo the 100th annniversary fetes which culminated the 1876 celebration in Philadelphia. We will look this week at the Orangetown Resolutions, which many feel provided the direct impetus, and the basis for the actual wording, for the Declaration in 1776. Through 1774 most Orange-town residents were content, if not altogether happy, with British rule over the colonies, and they hadn't had any major complaints about conditions in their immediate area. They were incensed however over reports they heard about the closing of Boston Harbor by the English.

On July 4 of that year a group of 25 or 30 of Orange-town's leading citizens, farmers and merchants alike, met at the town gathering place, Yoast Mabie's tavern in Tap-pan, to formulate a letter of protest to the English over the despised incident. They were still loyal British subjects, however, which was absolutely clear in their letter. When they finished the document they affixed their names and, according to Town Historian Ralph Braden, sent it to the British commander at New York City, for eventual forwarding to the King in England. A diligent search by Braden and other historians has failed to uncover the original, and no drafts have appeared so far either." However, early county historians such as Greene, Cole and Tomkins recorded the exact wording so the importance of the document has been preserved for posterity. A large framed copy, hand drawn in old English, was prepared by Braden and presented recently to the Orangetown Town Board.

It now hangs in the court room at town hall in Orangeburg, where all may view it daily and ponder on the Impact it had on events which led to American independence and the birth of the United states. Fur example, July 4, 1774 was two years before the famous July 4, 1776, which the nation celebrates as our country's birth date. Was it merely coincidental, or was it prophetic, or was it really in some way connected? Also consider the fact that one of the signers was John Haring of Tappan, who was appointed in the document as one of five men to "be a committee for this town, to correspond with the City of New York, and to conclude and agree upon such measures as they shall judge necessary in order to obtain a repeal of said acts" (British regulations detested by the colonies, such as the closing of Boston Harbor, and the imposition of duties in imports and exports). John Haring became a member of the Provincial Congress of New York State, and later became its president, the highest form of local control in the state outside of British rule. Orangetown had also established its own "committee of correspondence" through the resolutions, to meet secretely at first, and later openly, with similar committees throughout the colonies.

The first public meeting of the several committees was on Sept. 5, 1774, two months after the signing of the Orangetown Resolutions, at Carpenter's Hall in Philadelphia. This meeting later became known as the First Continental Congress.
