EASPT ST. Louis. August 8,1871. Telegraph Tbe reign of dust ia about over for tbe present, and the rain from heaven la descending upon us In copious showers. Last Sunday we had a splendid rain which, as 1 learn, came In season to save the corn and late potatoes, and to-day as I "The low-flung clouds Have cast their garnered fullness down." We are certainly glad to witness its appearance, as it was never more needed than now.

The freight and passenger trade on our various railroads, has been largely on the increase since last I wrote, and from this time until cold weather, we do not apprehend that it will be necessary to write about dull times, as they will not be here. Our citizens have uttered up by the engines on the railroads, and indeed it has been the worst nuisance that our place is troubled with, as night Is made hideous with their noise, much to the annoyance and discomfort of to woo the tion was making whistling a and it will soon cease. Something new and sensational is to come off the twenty-fourth of this month, at the Methodist church, in the shape of a cravat party. As the idea is a new one here, it will undoubtedly create an excitement, and result as the managers wish it in a pecuniary The friends of Bt. George's Episcopal church had a moonlight excursion on the river last week, and according to all accounts, it was a magnificent affair, giving great satlsfac- to those who attended it.

It a splendid time for the yonng folks, and what results may spring from the soft words uttered under pale Luna's light, and how many hearts were made happier, time alone will tell. Work on the extension of St. Patt rick's church has been commenced, and under the hands of such men as Bannon and Bramhall of your place, It will soon be completed. We often see familiar faces from the Bluff City, who come among us to secure situations that our growing place furnishes, and it seems like home to be where they are. Rev.

John D. Jones, the minister in charge of the Presbyterian church here, announces that next Sabbath will end his labors in this field. Where he intends going deponent saith not, but one possessing tbe attainments of the Reverend gentleman need not long be Idle. We are assured, however, that the church will be supplied at once, and as Rev. Dr.

Norton has it in hand, we rest satisfied, knowing It will be so. The new coKe factory, on the banks of the Cabokla Creek, approaches completion rapidly, and it promises to be an imposing affair, occupying about half a square of round for tbe necessary buildings. Work on the bridge "makes haste slowly." AH the caissons for the shore piers in which the arches rest, are now finished. There are five in all, and on four of them the masonry and has been commenced. It will DOW take long to finish these, then work will be on the main piers.

A County Treasurer and a County Surveyor are to be nominated, delegates selected for the State Convention, and a Central committee chosen for tbe ensuing year.

Primaries will be held on Saturday next. County Treasurer being the only office of importance to be filled, the main Inquiry is as to whom shall be chosen for that responsible position. If the Republicans get out good anti-Court House men they will stand a good show of carry- Ing county. The Democrats held their Connty Convention at Carllnville yesterday, and nominated for Treasurer: James Wood, of Woodburn for Surveyor, Mr. Winchester, the present incumbent, and farther we have not heard of their doings, no published account having yet appeared, and we believe no delegates were appointed from Virden.

CONGEESSjrAN-AT-LAROE. Gen. Rinaker, being a home quite popular, the Republicans of Macoupin will doubtless support him so long as there Is hope of his nomination, but should it become evident that he cannot be nominated, the gallant Dick Oglesby will be their man. From what we hear, directly and indirectly, we think there Is no doubt of this. His "peremptory" letter, declining in any event to become a candidate, don't lead them to believe he will not stand if nominated, and serve If elected.

Editor i Alton Telegraph RAIN AND WATER tbe past two weeks this section has been visited with occasional fine showers, which were much needed. They have done the late corn much good, but were too long deferred to bring out fully the earlier planted. Our information is that there will be a fair crop of corn if all goes well. Throughout this section there has been much more difficulty ia getting water from wells the present summer than heretofore; more some farmers inform me than ever before. Owing to the pretty thorough draining of the farms in seasons of long dry spells, the former sources of supply being here is serious difficulty, es- wltb those having demands for large quantities, such as stock men, to get an adequate supply.

Almost every farmer has dug one or more new, or deepened old wells, and in many cases with very unsatisfactory results. The wells in this section, however, are comparatively shallow, and by sinking deeper more constant supply, and a better quantity will doubtless be obtained. NEW new and extensive stock of hardware, stoves, tin ware and furniture is being put into the fine rooms in the brick block on the west side of the square, formerly occupied by J. H. Wilcox by Wilcox, Hopkins Co.
