Evening Journal, Wilmington, Thursday. November 16, 1978 41 Letters to the Sports Editor Don't Insult My Band Uft Phot by Rm Dubkk Julius Erving of the 76ers soars over Kim dunk in the second quarter last night at the Hughes of the Denver Nuggets to score on a Spectrum. Ijones, Collins Shine on Defense "Nobody's even heard of the Delaware band outside of Newark'VTo this I politely say bull manure! Last season Pabst requested that the Delaware Band perform in a beer commercial, and is Pabst based in Newark? When Mr. Bodley editorialized "Most Delaware half-time shows are forgetable to say the least" mv blood started to boil. Over 1,000 man hours are involved in each Delaware half-time show; and all this time is spent to produce such poor results? Fortunately I believe that Mr.

Bodley's opinion is the exception, not the rule; but if he thinks that he can do a better job he is welcome to come to Delaware Stadium, borrow my tuba (787) and try. He certainly has the wind for it. BillHitchens Newark Rudely Handled No one will dispute the fact that the Phillie Phanatic's appearance at last Saturday's Villanova game was humorous to say the least but the tastless and rude manner in which the occurrence was reported by Sports Editor Hal Bodley leaves a bad taste in our mouths. The Marching Band is more than just a tradition here at Delaware. It is a group of young adults who work hard each week and donate countless hours during the summer so that fans in the Delaware stadium have something more interesting to do at halftime than watch the grass grow for fifteen minutes.

"Broadway Perhaps not, but very enjoyable in our opinion. Mr. Bodley uses the term "forgettable" in his description of the Delaware band shows. We hope that, although the details become faded, today's undergraduates will not be able to recall Delaware football without vivid memories of the band. As for David Raymond's incredible lack of tact, perhaps if he had notified the proper officials this unfortunate situation could have been avoided and a marching band show planned around his antics.

It seems as though the key to this whole matter lies in a statement made by Raymond himself. He stated "I've worked with over 50 bands this year but in this case it seems as though he worked with no one but himself. Sally Burris Senior. U. of D.

Newark You can insult my school, you can insult my state, you can insult my country, you can even insult my mom's apple pie; but don't ever insult my band! I am referring of course, to the article which appeared in last Sunday's News Journal in which your sports editor, Mr. Bodley, and a 6V4-foot furry creature, better known as the Phillie Phanatic, did a hatchet job on my band, better known as the Fightin Blue Hens Marching Band, and, what is even worse, on my band director. An. insult to a fine marching organization, such as our band, is bad enough, but the personal attacks, such as the ones that were lodged in the article in question, are plain libelous, Dr. Blackinton is one hell of a director, Mr.

Bodley, anyone involved in any way with the music department here could tell you that. He is an extremely talented and dedicated man, as is his assistant, Mr. Streckfuss. Together, they work long hours to put together a 10-minute show for every home game. Practice and their work, begins long before classes even do.

Yes, the entire marching band spends a week of 10-hour days just preparing the music and marching for our first show. Don't tell me I did that for nothing, I didn't. We spend at least six additional hours a week on the following shows; don't try and tell me I'm doing that for nothing, I'm not, I'm doing it for one credit. To look at it another way we're not out there to live up to Mr. Bod-lcy's or anybody else's standards we're there to meet Dr.

Black-inton's and our own expectations, and I think we musicians are a better judge of musical ability than any sports editor. From the standpoint of anybody else in the stadium, we are there to entertain, and buddy, if you don't like what's playin', you can go buy a hot dog. Granted, the Phanatic did liven up the show, but I almost had to march over him at one point if he had stuck around a moment longer, he would have had a trumpet in his face; he was standin' where I aimed to go, and I had to go there, Phillie Phanatic notwithstanding. I know the thing was spontaneous, but we were not even given the courtesy of a moment's notice to prepare ourselves Villano-va's band had even less warning than us. If your band messed up on tw11' III Saturday, it was due to the fact that we were trying to avoid the Phanatic and his antics, not because we usually march "sloppily," we don't.

As for Mr. Bodley, if he ever takes MU101 Appreciation of Music, I hope he flunks it. Scratch that, I know he will flunk it, because Mr. Bodley probably doesn't appreciate anything. Patricia M.

Malarkey Irate marching Blue Hen Newark Dtrply Distressing Being one of the 170 plus people directly involved with the University of Delaware Marching Band I find Hal Bodley's article "Phanatic Fan steals show at Delaware" deeply distressing. It is true that Dave Raymond did appear in his Phillie Phanatic costume at the Delaware football game on Saturday. He was entertaining. Mr. Raymond is very good at what he docs, and in my opinion would have been a welcome addition to the Delaware Band's half-time show if he had demonstrated enough common courtesy to coordinate his appearance with Dr.

Blackinton. Mr. Streckfuss, or Mr. Metzger of the Delaware Band. Mr.

Raymond not only rudely interrupted the Delaware Band Show, but managed to intrude on the Villanova show as well. I feel a little background information on the Delaware Marching Band is necessary to further explain my position. The 170 members report to a pre-school opening Band Camp for intense drills and rehearsal in preparation for the upcoming football season. This year, Band Camp lasted five days. During the football season, the Delaware band has six hours of rehearsal per week to learn and polish a half-time show for the Delaware football fans.

The band is a true cross section of academic disciplines, as every college here at the University of Delaware is represented by at least one student. Rehearsals last from 4-6 three days a week while the majority of the students are eating dinner. For the last three years in the fall I set my schedule so I can play tuba in the band, and I am not the exception. Many students juggle labs, review sessions, and part-time job schedules to participate in the university course MU 115, band-marching. In the article Mr.

Bodley quotes a bystander at Delaware Stadium 10-9 Daily Sun. 12-5 VISA and was shoved by the frustrated Thompson at midcourt with 8:18 left in regulation. "I just try to stay in front of him." "It's stunning," Bobby Jones said of Thompson's point total. "Doug does as well as anybody on David. He's kind of a pest, always around a guy.

"That's a credit to our defense. Dough and Maurice (Cheeks), they really bothered him and we clogged up pretty well. It was pretty much a total defensive effort." Of course, when it really came down to offense in the overtime, Erving delivered, leaving the Nuggets 0-for-5 in the Spectrum. McGinnis sat and watched the final 4:17 of overtime because he had fouled out. This was nothing unusual for McGinnis, who often did the same while with the Sixers.

"In light of what was said and done, I'm glad he (McGinnis) had a big game and we won," said Erving, who was 2 points below his season-high with the 33 points Ju-luis also grabbed 10 rebounds and collected six assists. McGinnis, who made 12 of 20 shots, gave the 76ers credit, then said he "was bitter about the way it the trade happened. "But tonight my head was in a different place and I was coming out to play. And it sure was nice to hear those cheers." did a great job, holding their offense to 103 points, said Continued from Page 39 jot like Julius to stop." McGinnis, who also had 5 steals, i assists, 12 rebounds and 3 blocks, hade one of the key defensive plays of the game when he stole an Erving pass on a double-team with Pobby Wilkerson and the Nuggets called time with 12 seconds left. But the Jones boys, Bobby and Caldwell, thwarted the Denver plan to have McGinnis take the final shot.

They overplayed him. So, David Thompson wound up taking the last shot in regulation and he added another miss to his dismal 3-for-16 shooting night. He would up with only 8 points, finishing under 10 for only the second time in his NBA career. Thompson came into the game 25 for 45 in his last two games, Which also were losses. "Collins just sticks to me," he said, Credit Doug Collins, who hit 9 of 22 shots for 18 points, with the way Thompson played.

on a tightrope as his father continues his battle with cancer, drew three Early fouls by Thompson, two of hem in the first half and was held scoreless. But he did hit a 16-footer to tie the game at 97-97 with 1:19 to play in the final quarter and came back to block a layup attempt by Collins for the second time of the night. "I can't block his shot," said Collins, who nevertheless blocked three Thompson shots batted the hall away from him several times, Sixers Coach Billy Cunningham. "And you get to see two different players in Erving and McGinnis You see Julius at the end of the game, the way he can control it. And you see George.

"They're not concerned with complementing each other. In this situation, they have a lot more freedom and they showed it tonight. "They're all great players, it's as simple as that," added Cunningham. "And we're 11-2."
