MARLA ENGLISH: She chose love She had her Big Chance for fame and riches the break every starlet dreams of and she turned it down i Jrr Exr- ing fever. And there apparently she reached an unlikely decision. From her bed she called the studio to say, "I can't do The Mountain. I'm tired and upset." Stunned, Paramount suspended Maria and signed another starlet, Barbara Dar-row, for the part. When Maria left the hospital, parade buttonholed her.

"I don't know why I did it," she said. "It's the dumbest thing I've ever done. I have absolutely no explanation." An explanation came, however, from a close relative. Said she: "Maria has fallen in love with a young Paramount player, Bud Pennell. She desperately wanted the studio to give him a part in The Mountain.

Then the two of them could have gone off to France together. When the studio refused, she blew her top. A woman in love will do anything." This, a Paramount executive conceded, was basically correct. "Only an actress in love," he added, "would give up a picture with Spencer Tracy." HOLLYWOOD. This is the sad saga of starlet Maria English.

Starlets reputedly are willing to do just about anything for a chance to become full-fledged stars. But Maria was offered a clean shot at stardom and gave it up because she was in love. At 20, Maria for three years has been a handsomely curved girl who flits through one or two scenes of a movie, saying little but showing much. Originally signed by Paramount after winning a beauty contest in her home town, San Diego, she was paid $100 a week to decorate scenes in various films, including Red Garters and Rear Window. Then the studio pulled a surprise.

It cast Maria opposite no less a figure than Spencer Tracy in a film to be made in France, The Mountain. This was as Hollywood puts it the Big Break. Before leaving the country, Maria needed a smallpox vaccination. She got it, promptly went to the hospital with a soar INVOLVED in Maria's confusion are Larry (Bud) Pennell, Barbara Darrow.
