Artist strives to bring passion to icons yet honor tradition BILL BROADWAY cheek-to-cheek with the baby Jesus, with a border of silk cloth he bought on a recent trip to India. "I want crowds of people to see the beauty of Heaven (through my icons)," he said. "I want them not to bring their troubles and problems into the church, for them to come to church not to ask but to come to say thank you and share and give." His most famous icon, "Inexhaustible Cup," has attracted great crowds during the past five years because of stories about its power to heal brain cancer and help people overcome alcoholism.

one of 13 icons on display at the center, Sokolov said, he focused on the eyes to capture the "quiet, deep emotion" behind Jesus' kindness and humanity. Modern believers see God "more like a (compassionate) father than a monster or judge," as often depicted in traditional icons, he said. In a subtle variation on traditional technique, he framed the face with three gems two emeralds and a tourmaline using tiny nails to attach them to the surface of the lime-wood backing. Sokolov framed "Mother of God, Korsunskaya," an image of Mary t( I Paf' 1 I Wast)ingtonPost i '''t': I NTHQNTS PIER 9 I iMo'itjWhif The Washington Post WASHINGTON Alexander Sokolov is working to change the face of Russian iconography, subtly but perceptibly. The fall of the Soviet regime a decade ago has brought renewed interest in worship in his country, he said.

But many people entering an Orthodox church for the first time are disappointed, not awed, when they look into the blank-eyed, flattened faces on the walls, ceilings and floors. Instead of discovering a mystical pathway to God, they see "formal painting without soul," "decoration" without feeling, said the artist, in town for a brief exhibition of his work at the Russian Cultural Centre in Washington. Sokolov, 40, is part of a new generation of Moscow-based iconogra-phers. Twenty years ago, when the painting of icons was still prohibited by the Communist government, there were "very few" masters of the Byzantine style, he said. Today, there are "at least 10 good icon painters" and numerous others studying and practicing the art.

Despite this revival of interest, many contemporary Russians do not understand or identify with icons even when they make an effort to do so, Sokolov said. The problem is not with the medium itself, a centuries-old art form that depicts biblical events, but with the "main rule" of Christian iconography: A painter "is not to put his own passions into his work." Sokolov has accepted commissions to paint individual icons or murals or to piece together ceramic-tile mosaics at churches and monasteries in Russia, Poland, the United States and Japan. In most cases, as required by the "very conservative" Orthodox hierarchy, he has followed the common practice of copying existing icons by previous masters. Mere copying has no soul. "It's not my song," he said.

Sokolov believes iconography can "evolve" without radically altering the genre. The artist would not depict the Apostles in modern attire, for example, or stray from such traditional materials as gold leafing, silver gilt and solid wood "canvases." He tries to use "innovations to underline the spiritual content of the character I'm doing."
