KEENE I have seven angels--not winged creatures etched in stained glass, but angels just the same. They dwell in the bright heaven of my memory, and on a moment's notice they will come to me, their faces radiant, their voices clear as church bells on a Sabbath morning in springtime. There's one with blond hair and blue eyes. I've walked beside him on many a hike through the broad open countryside. Never will I forget the autumn day when a whiteclad nurse with somber countenance informed me that this bright-eyed youth had slipped away in the night.

The flowers I had carried to him I carried home again. Gone; but in the pure heaven of memory he is a strong youthful angel coming to me through the mists and fog of mortal circumstance to do angel service in my hours of need. Another angel I have who wears a crew cut. He's an unconquerable idealist, who believes that life is good, and that the Great broods tenderly over all things guides the steps of mortal men. Also I have a strong, practical angel whose hair is white as the driven snow, and one whose hair is a halo of silver.

(He declares he's bald!) Then there is my dear devoted angel whose face I've known in darkness and in light. I remember when her hair lay in raven curls above her full young forehead; now the black is flecked with white. But in the heaven of my memory where she comes to me in those hours when we are absent one from another in body, she is forever young. Her gay voice is like the sound of a happy mountain stream flowing toward the sea. Then there's the warm, faithful angel of the quiet eyes and soft, velvet voice.

I knew her first in the long glad days of my childhood, and memory she wears those sunlit days as a lovely garland. Finally, among my angel's there is the bright laughing one who speaks with a broad western accent which the East has never successfully conquered. Her laughter is like the sound of a stone skipping across a winter pond. A man is most fortunate who has a circle of bright angels that he can summon to his side in hours of needradiant faces and warm, comfortable voices that inhabit the heaven of his memory.
