PAGE TWELVE THE LUPINGTON DAILY NEWS, LUDIINGiON, MICHIGAN Inland Lakes Near Fern Popular with Resorters TUESDAY, JUNE 30, 1959 Once a post office and station on Mason Oceana railroad, Fern, the center of a thriving rural community south ot Custer, is located not far from a number of inland lakes, which are popular with summer resorters. Fern was noted for its lumbering operations in the early days when this area was famous for its forests. Farming followed lumbering in the Fern area and today the new industry, summer resorts, is becoming more and more popular on inland lakes in the vicinity. There are a few small resorts established on lovely Lost lake, about a mile and a half northwest of Fern. This lake, which is well known for bluegill fishing, is said to have remained hidden from the white men for many years arter tftey came to this region.

Its discovery is attributed to a French priest, who roamed through the wilderness converting and baptizing the Indians. While this priest was breaking his way through the forest he came upon the body of water and immediately decided that its name should be Lost lake. The priest's French name has been forgotten, but he is remembered by his Indian name, Washaw Gcczie. Eden township abounds in beautiful lakes. Some of them in the vicinity of Fern arc Devil's lake and Long lake as well as some privately owned lakes.

Across the township boundary line in Riverton are the Oxbow lakes and St. Mary's lake, which are popular with fishermen, many of whom also have favorite trout holes in Pcnlwatcr river and in the Sippy ditch, south and east of Fern.
