National Weather Service Forecast through 8 a.m. tomorrow By BRUCE PRINGLE Sussex Bureau reporter GEORGETOWN Television station WBOC of Salisbury, and proposed station WBOT of Wilmington, went to court Monday in a fight over whether their call letters are so much alike that viewers will be confused. The Salisbury station, which broadcasts on Channel 16, brought in a linguistics expert who testified that of 17,576 possible four-letter combinations starting with no two sound more alike than WBOC and WBOT.

But Delaware Valley Broadcasters L.P., whose Wilmington station is scheduled to be on the air on Channel 61 before the end of the year, provided its own expert, who contended the similarity doesn't matter that much. He said he has conducted surveys that show the vast majority of viewers identify stations by their channel numbers, not their call letters. Randy J. Holland, attorney for the Salisbury station, said in his opening remarks that the confusion already has started. Holland-said WBOC has received telephone calls from people who mistakenly believe it is WBOT.

He urged Vice-Chancellor Jack B. Jacobs to order the Wilmington station to adopt new call letters. The trial was expected to conclude today. Attorney Roderick R. McKelvie, representing WBOT, said that in a survey of viewers in Kent County the only area of Delaware in which the stations' signals are expected to overlap WBOC usually was referred to as "Channel 16" or "the Salisbury station." Douglas A.

Boyd, chairman of the commu nications department of the University of Delaware, said each viewer was asked to list his three favorite stations. Of 70 answers, he said, only two were in the form of call letters. In a larger survey in New Castle County, only five of 298 answers were call letters, Boyd said. The telephone surveys were conducted last week by students under Boyd's supervision. His testimony followed that of Daniel A.

Dinnsen, a linguistics professor at Indiana University. Dinnsen said the similarity in the sets of call letters is especially troublesome for listeners because only the last letters are different, and the sounds at the ends of words are often the hardest to recognize. Further, he said and are two of the letters most difficult for listeners to tell apart.
