The stock market snapped out of a downward trend today and advanced fractions to 2 points or so. Trading expanded to the fastest rate in a couple of weeks.

Wall Street quarters offered a variety of reasons for the recovery, including a let-up in tax-selling, and bargain-hunting influenced by the fact the general level of prices Is now near the low of the year. Steels, rails and motors made the best showing. Among gainers were U. S. Steel, Youngstonw Sheet Tube, General Motors, Chrysler, Studebaker, Santa Fe, Southern Pacific, Southern Railway, Baltimore Ohio, Nickel Plate, Atlantic Coast Line, Standard Oil of California, Skelly Oil, Mission Montgomery Ward, Douglas Aircraft, Union Carbide, American Woolen and Eastern Air Lines.

The revival in demand lifted some stocks from their low prices for the year. Higher in the curb were Kaiser-Prazer, Electromaster, Fairchild Camera, Salt Dome Oil, Pantepec Oil, Barium Steel, Lone Star Gas, Niagara Hudson Power and Humble Oil.
