She GARDEN CITY World's largest outdoor free pool to get renovations By The Associated Press GARDEN CITY The city's swimming pool, famed for Its size but In major need of repairs after 79 years of use and long- deferred upkeep, Is getting a reprieve. City commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to spend nearly $1.3 million on Improvements to the football field-sized pool, rather than replace It or phase It out. "I see the makings of a great pool here," Commissioner Juana "Janle" Perkins said. "It's just a matter of making a commitment. For years and years we've let It go.

Now we need to take responsibility" The Big Pool is the world's largest outdoor, concrete, free municipal swimming pool, and the city spends $100,000 a year to operate and maintain It. In voting to keep it, commissioners acknowledged the pool's image in the community, which has taken a dive In recent years because of concerns about water quality and the pool's amenities, is just as much In need of repair as the structure. Reviving the pool may prove to be a task proportionate to its mammoth scale. City Manager Bob Halloran said the city will likely start with up to $350,000 in improvements to be made by this summer, which will be flmded by discretionary bonds Issued by the city.
