Two councilmen will be elected. Markovich, a former Wood River policeman, is a safety engineer for Americ a Associated Insurance panies. He was Markovich born in Wood River, lived away from here for a time, then returned. During World War II he served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He and Mrs. Markovich are the parents of four children, two boys and two girls, Sunday, Markovich issued prepared statement concerning his candidacy: "My.record stands for itself as one of honesty and integrity as a former officer of the Wood River I Police Department. Linkogel is acting clerk at the present time. The names of eight candidates appear on the ballot for a four- year term as village trustee, four of which will be elected.

In the order of their filing the candidates are Albert (AD Schmidt, Lorell Hicks, William A. (Bill) Linkogel, Jerry L. Lamar, Rafael (Marc) L. Marderosian, Vernon T. Welch, Frank Keasler, and Pearl (P.

Greene. Hicks and Linkogel are unning for re-election. A three way race looms for i two-year term as village trustee. The contestants are Terrier Scribner; Otto F. Brazier, former East Alton may- and Kenneth (Kennie) S.

Ladd. One candidate will be elected to the seat vacated last year after the resignation of Clinton Phalen. Ed Kirk, police magistrate, was first to file his petition for another four-year term in that office. He is opposed on the by George T. Louvier and John Hanks.

Three candidates, Margaret Apple, Thelma Cannedy, and Paul E. Simms have filed for a six-year term on the village library board. Only two will be elected. Mayor Charles Vanpreter said he present village board will wld a special meeting Wednesday, the day after the election, to make the official canvass ol the vote. The new city officials will be installed early in May.

East Alton WMS Officers Named Mrs. Hmiderford Will Head Organization EAST ALTON. Women's Missionary Society of the First Baptist Church held their annual election' of officers during a meeting Friday evening at the home of'Mrs. J. C.

WOOD Wood River will elect two councirmen in a municipal election Tuesday. Polls will open from 6 to 5 p.m. There are four candidates, two of them incumbents. The candidates are Hugh Wort hen of 749 Condit. Edwin Bean of 107 S.

Ninth both incumbents, Bernard S. Markovich of 4 S. Main and Frank Sweet of 606 N. Ninth St. The two incumbents went into office with the launching of the council-manager plan of municipal government, and are ideologically attached to that form of municipal operation.

Sweet: has announced that he is definitely opposed to the council-manager form of municipal government, while Markovich has stated that, he favored the plan prior to its inception and has not. changed his mind. There will be one polling place in each of the city's five wards: First Ward, City Hall at Wood River and Madison avenues; Second Ward, Roundhouse at Wood River avenue and Eaton; Third American Legion Hall, 229 E. Ferguson Fourth Ward, Wood River Drainage Office, 9 S. Sixth Fifth ward, City Water Pumping Station, 1 S.
