But, it didn't really pick up steam until a couple of weeks ago, when the broadcast and cable division of the Providence Journal Co. put WPHL-TV(17)ontheblock. Now, Paramount Pictures is rumored to be discussing with Taft Broadcasting acquiring some or all of Taft's 12 television stations, most particularly WTAF-TV (29) in Philadelphia.

Add to this both WPHL and WTAF telling the fledgling Fox Broadcasting fourth network effort that they are interested in being the local affiliate and you have a television market in flux. Where Fox ends up in Philadelphia, the nation's fourth largest market with 2.6 million television homes, will probably be decided by the ultimate ownership status of the two stations. The sale of WPHL, for which Providence Journal has given no reason, is in the hands of Morgan Stanley Co. While the investment banker isn't expected to put a price tag on the station until this week, WPHL will most likely be marketed in excess of $100 million. That price may put it out of the reach of a local syndicate of investors, long-time WPHL general manager Gene McCurdy says, but there won't be a lack of buyers.
