He is only a 13-year-old Sicilian waif, but already the homeless youngster is in his second campaign of the war. Tony's parents were killed when war came to their small, Sicilian village.

Soon, the ragged little kid was hanging around the company kitchen, begging for food. The softhearted Yankees took him in and little Tony clicked from the start. He bunked with Staff Sergt. Ben- nie Lovato of Mosquero, N. and Sergeant Lovato has been the little Sicilian's foster father ever since.

Tony had another name, but it was too hard for the Americans to pro nounce, let alone remember. So they tagged him Tony Macaroni. When the engineers got ready to invade, they fitted Tony out with some cast-off clothing, gave him a barracks bag full of rations, patted him sadly on the head and sent him on his tearful way to his grandmother. The company hadn't been at the staging area for two hours before the kid showed- up, begging to be taken along. The youngster's grin through a lot of tears resulted in his being dressed to standards.

He was given a battered pistol that wouldn't fire and allowed aboard the trocp ship. Tony was given the non-existent rank of technician sixth grade. Little Tony, proud as mmch. an4 held up by the armpits of burly en gineers, came throuirh the surf onto the Italian mainland early in the Fifth Army campaign. He has been with the outfit ever since, doine odd jobs around the kitchen.

Tony is happy in the front lines. The soldiers treat him like a kid orotner. Rumor has it that Tony Macaroni is bucking for another stripe. That would make him a private. Silver 'Outranks' Gold Second lieutenants in the United States Army wore plain shoulder straps until World War I.
