This NEW YORK. Dec. 22 (U.R). "Old-fashioned" possession-style basketball and the widely-scorned zone defense still win games, as Coach Bruce Drake's Oklahoma Sooners proved to City College of New York's defending national champions. By thoroughly exploiting the keep the ball until you-have-a-good-shot, technique and coupling it with the zone, which is informally banned in many conferences, the fifteenth ranked Sooners handed sixth-ranked CCNY its second defeat of ttie season.

Harry Jacobs, the D. lightweight, died at St. Clare's Hospital last nigrht a little' less than 24 hours after he was battered senseless in the seventh round of a bout at St. Nicholas Arena by Percy Bassett of Philadelphia. Sonny Boy never regained consciousness.

Death was attributed to "inter-cerebral hemorrhage resulting from cerebral concussion." Chairman Eddie Eagan of the New York State Boxing Commission announced that he will conduct a "thorough investigation to see if everything was as it should be" regarding the bout. The legal bureau of the police department also said that, following procedure in other ring fatalities, "all parties concerned" will be called to the district attorney's office for statements. Seventh Ring Death West's death was the second for New York the year and both of them resulted in fights at St. Nick's. Laverne Roach died last February following a knockout by Georgie Small.

The other U. S. ring death occurred in California on Dec. 7 when Johnny Lopez was killed. Six other fighters were killed throughout the world this year, making a total of nine.

We attempted to outline to Mr. Saigh some of the reasons for the attendance drop here in 1950, pointing out that it.

was not alone Allentown that was way off but the entire Inter-State League as well. We don't believe that television and radio had as much to do with the attendance drop as the unusually bad weather, and so informed Mr. Saigh. In contrast to the year before when Allentown had only one date postponed because of weather conditions, 1950 saw over a dozen postponements at Breadon Field because of rain or cold weather. TV and radio broadcasts of major league games hurt some, especially on nights when CJurt Simmons was slated to pitch for the Phillies early in the season.

Starting off the 1950 we thought, and still do, that Allentown had a better ball club than at the start of the 1949 season when Allentown won the pennant by 11 games, but the parent Cardinals didn't give Gene Corbett the replacements that it gave to Al Hollings-worth the season before. And as a result when the race got hot, Allentown was left at the post. With a good ball club in 1951, we believe Allentown fans will back the Cardinals better than ever before, that the attendance will go better than the record 1949 season. For one thing, there's a roof on. the Breadon Field grandstand now and the Sunday afternoon games will draw better."
