"I'M ALL RIGHT JACK" I I Wayne Will Star in New Gann Story Will Also Be Aviation Drama; Easter Seal Luncheon Success BY IIEDDA HOPPER One of John Wayne's best pictures was "The High and the Mighty" written by Ernest K. Gann.

He tvrote another titled "Fate Is the Hunter," an avia- tion story which Darryl Zanuck bought and in which Duke Wayne will star for Richard Zanuck. Heaven only knows when Wayne will find time to make it but he'll manage. Paul Hesse, the photographer who makes ladies look as beautiful as they wish they were, sold his beautiful, were quite aston ishing in their interplay and ingenious freedom. Just how aleatory Pierre Boulcz's "Improvisatinn sur Mallarme" No. 1 may be was difficult to determine.

It seemed mainly to be definite and preconceived, although by and large the sound ef fects so carefully produced by six members of the Los Angeles Percussion Ensem ble, and the harp played by Dorothy Remsen were less interesting than some of the accidents achieved by the Improvisation Ensemble. Marni Nixon sang the soprano solo based on a Mallarme poem with what one assumes to be her usual un canny ease and accuracy, but as vocal music it was harrowing and meaningless and seldom seemed to be long to the instrumental ac companiment. I VICTORY UKEWOOn .7 ACADEMY AWARD NOMINATIONS! 'Aleatory' of Music BY ALBERT GOLDBERG There is nothing like fol lowing contemporary music to enlarge one's vocabulary The Monday Evening Con cert in Plummer Tark's Fiesta Hall wa3 devoted to composers who are moving in the direction of an "alea tory" concept, which was defined by the program as "nonpredeterm ined detail within a predetermined general unfolding unpredictability within a controlled field." But composers did not in vent the word. It can be found in Webster, where it means "depending on an un certain event or contingency as to both profit and loss; as aleatory contracts in clude bets and stakes, lot tery agreements, wagering contracts, etc. As a socio logical term it means per taining to luck; resulting from luck; as the aleatory element in life." Who Won? As applied to the new mu sic it denotes, in less nign-brow language, a composition in which the performer is expected to do a cer tain amount of improvising. In Morton Feldman's "Durations" each player plays the notes indicated for him at speed of his own choice, which makes all the har mony except the opening chord, and all the rhythm, sheer accident. It was hard to tell who won the slow or the fast players.

In any case, Arthur Hoberman's alto flute held out 1 than Janet DeLancey's vio lin, Howard uoits ceuo, or James Maclnnes' piano. Since Gunther Schuller Music for Violin, Piano, and Percussion, which is said also to embody accidental elements, wa3 deleted from the program, the aleatory concept was interrupted. Instead, Lukas Foss played Mr. Schuller's Fantasy for piano (or harp), a vigorous; piece in the 12-tone manner that may have sounded bet ter than it really is, for Mr. 'oss is that kind of pianist.

And Mr. Schuller conducted Jazz, Spirituals Slated at Shrine This Friday evening will be "'Soul' Night at the Shrine," a blending of the instrumental jazz with the vocaTahd dance arts. There will be presented an audio-visual portrayal of the progress of jazz through its primitive, spiritual and blues phases to the contemporary sounds-we hear today. He assures me as he had the public he's not interested in running for the Presidency. His concern is helping more Republicans into Senate seats in '62. He scotched the rumor he'd ever be on a double ticket with Nelson Rockefeller. The luncheon was for benefit of Gompers Memorial Center for crippled children.

Place was packed with ladies wearing beautiful hats; they went all out. Some admitted they hadn't worn one in five years. Best Luncheon Gov. and Mrs. Paul Fannin were present and Christy Fox was MC.

And it was the best luncheon I've ever had at one of those affairs, double lamb chops. The Gompers Clinic is one of finest in the country; they not only help crippled children but grownups, polio victims, and use Mrs. Spencer Tracy's method for correcting speech and hearing defects. One thing she misses is deep-sea diving. Her bedroom is in her favorite shade of blue. Hanging on the wall was original Time cover of Pope Pius XII. Before leaving she said, "I know Henry will want to see you," and opened his bedroom door. There he was sleeping peacefully like a cherub.
