That the craze for the ultra-modern and the bizarre in silverware and jewelry no longer reigns supreme, is the opinion held by many leading jewelers in Wilmington. The pendulum of fashion seems slowly to be swinging back into more conservative channels.

The most popular creations in jewelry are cleverly designed neckpieces and bracelets to match. The streamer, a neckpiece designed for the new sun-back gowns, has not captured the public fancy to any great extent. The bracelet, necklace, earrings, and ring combination, which was designed primarily for formal evening wear, seems to be gaining popularity among many women. A new note for the ensemble in the tiny flacon of silver and glass t-o be used as a container perfume. The linked chain bracelet and necklace wrought in silver, with heart-haped locks, are great favorites at the moment.

Recently a similar bracelet was found in Europe, dated 1612. Another, fastened with an enameled lock, is in the Victoria and Albert Museum in England. The laveliere. a favorite during the reign of Louis XIV, is attaining much favor in thisVity. CarncHan and lapis lazuli are stones much in vogue.

I Intricacy of design is a notable fea- ture of these new pendants. I Scarf pins and clasps are again I finding favor with the masculine element in Wilmington, conservative designs being more popular with the majority. The jewelers generally believe that the diamond is by far the most outstanding precious stone on the market today. The square-cut blue-white diamond in a severely plain, four-prong setting has replaced the elaborate ring of last season. Yellow JoId Out.

For some time there has been an effort to bring yellow gold into prominence again bat it has not been successful. White gold is the leading metal, although green gold and platinum are much in favor. There is an unusual demand timong the men for very heavy, intricately-carved rings of gold. The cheaper wrist-watches are losing favor with both sexes. The general preference is for the rather small, cleverly designed ones of excellent make.

There is almost no demand for liie old-fashioned pocket watch. Harmony is the keynote of all present day fashions. This, says one local jeweler, accounts for the waning popularity of the Slavic, the bar-banc, and the purely imitative antique costume jewelry, recently in vogue. Silver services must stand usage are usually desired in the long wearing plate. The popularity of, sterling stiver is growing with amazing rapidity, however.

Of late, the Italian and Spanish Influence in designs is very marked. There is a grace and a restrained beauty in those services which make them desirable to women who delight Words of Wisdom God is -Plato. and 'light His shadow. The race is governed its imagination. Napoleon I.

Combines Fashions i By MML LISBETH. One cf the most intriguing of the many interesting costumes seen at the famous English racing classic at Ascot recently was that worn by Lady Dhunjibhoy Bomanji, who combined the cool styles of her native India with the fashionable cut of conventional English attire. Lady Dhunjibhoy's veil was studded with five-pointed stars, worn draped over her head, running down to form part of her skirt. She carried an elaborate frilled parasol acotiier otyle innovation. The quaint ness and charm of the Early English and Colonial homes necessitate a pre vailing harmony in all household an purtenances, and many Wilmington hostesses carry out this atmosphere by selecting thse patterns in the silver service which are especially designed for those style homes. Although many delight in introducing the at mosphere of a bygone era into their present day lives, an increasing num ber of local hostesses prefer the very new patterns in silver, the distinc tlveness and grace of which subtly suggest something of the modern at titude and spirit. Those who prefer simplicity and durability, coupled with unusual grace. and an air of traditional charm, en thuse over the new but faithful re productions of Early American and English pewter. There is an irresist ible charm about pewter and a cer tain dignitv.

SuRgest Old World. Sumptuously furnished homes often demand a heavier and richer service than that of silver. A metal, closely resembling old gold in appearance and designed in ornate fashion or severe simplicity, has achieved a cer tain popularity here, perhaps becaxise it is suggestive of the spirit of the old world. In 1827, John Flaxman, an Englishman, effected a change from the heavy, clumsy services to those of classical design, which have found increasing favor ever since. The Old English pattern, new very much in vogue, was originated during the reign of George III.

Many lovers and collectors of old silver In Wilmington might be interested to know that spoons, resembling our tea and dessert spoons, were not used until the end of the seventeenth century, nor was the teapot introduced until that time. Punch bowls and forks were first used at the time of the restoration of Charles II; finger bowls ceased to be a necessity then and were listed among the luxuries at court. The popular chafing-dish was originated during the reign of Queen Anne in the form of a "spirit-lamp." At the same time the now indispensable dish ring was introduced into Ireland. In 1823. the electro-plating device, invented and used by the Messrs.

Elk-ington caused a ruling to be made that all pieces containing 925 parts of pure silver to every 1.000 parts of metal be marked "sterling," the name having been derived from the ancient term "esterling. used by early English silversmiths to denote the high quality of their workmanship. In 1907, a national statute was passed to prevent an influx into the market of imitation silver. The study of jewelry and silver would prove to be a fascinating past-time for those who are curious about the early history of the modem things now in vogue. Meetings Tonight Painters.
