IQ Part lVThurs July 3, 1969 Family Joins the -Peace Corps A TRIBUTE TO JUDY GARLAND LIMITED ENGAGEMENT! MATS. 4TH OF JULY BEVERLY HUH mW 000 SUNSCT Mtiil fttf WH tftfC MKKINO IN 9000 BtM. 'ORSON WELLES' together and raises" a neighbor's barn. But volunteering sort of got to be social status: Masses of women doing 'good' things and putting on balls and such. "We need to re-evaluate the whole volunteer-thing.

It's become the popular thing, the status thing. It should be a heart-thing. When one really person to person, with those who need, it changes big things." "It even changes the way they vote," adds John Guyer. Both John and Diana Guyer, generation Califor-nians, feel they are really "traditionalists." Grandchildren of pion eers, they want a "piece of the pioneering action" In this modern-day revolution. The family home i3 all wrapped up and it will be waiting for their return.

The language barrier is ahead: Though they both know and speak Spanish, they'll have to hone it sharp, since one of John's jobs will be to translate and then interpret legal documents. And everything is "on go." Except Ludmilla, That's David's, Stephen's and Brooks! mule. Ludmilla can't go with them to Chile. Like John's new office, Ludmilla will just have to wait behind. bum i 1f 1 "MOSTSENtWON.

Admittedly, some of their friends think they are crazy, especially since John's career is just gathering speed.

He's been in the investment business since 1959, and four years with American Investment Counseling Corp. "That was the major decision," he says, sniffing the wet paint in his new office. "But the office will be here when I get back. And I'm pretty much of an optimist. I'm just leaving all that wide open.

We'll take it in stride when we get back." Guyer's opting for Peace Corps (rather than service in Washington or inner-city work in this country) has a double-edged reason. "Like it or not, America is the world's leader," he said. "We are no shining example, believe me. But by the end of 2,000 the population of Latin America will be 600 million, and the disparity between the haves and have-nots will be greater than it is today. "This is the challenge of the near future.

The poor and underprivileged of the world must have a chance to be in charge of the destiny of their own lives, to work out against their own frustrations, have a piece of the action." The Guyers will work to spur small businesses in the cities and villages of Chile; improve education, health. Most of all, they'll be involved with the people of Chile. "Chile is a fairly good example of democracy," says Guyer. "People to-people is the only way to make any democracy work." What the Guyers learn in Chile and what they learned in Chicago will be excellent grounding for what they expect to be life-long second careers, which they just lump under the word "volunteering." Social Status "We're almost the only country in the world in which 'volunteering' is a major foundation block," says Guyer. "People from all walks of life volunteer and that is what President Nixon is looking for, a new American enthusiasm that can pull this country back together again, people meeting and knowing people and understanding them and their problems." Diana Guyer adds her thoughts: "We started out right like everybody gets aii New show!
