The series starts 1 Thursday night Continued from Fl that "you can tell an awful lot" by gazing into their eyes, Oxford scientist Marian Dawkins believes that their facial expressions can be misleading. "We could be dead wrong in our interpretation" of them, she adds.

Take the African elephant family on the screen, for example. Are we, indeed, misinterpreting or over-stressing the affection these family members appear to have for one another? Shakespeare defined love as caring for another more than for yourself. Is that what's going on here? Or from our perspective, are we engaging in anthropomorphism-attaching human traits to animalsin the extreme? Inevitably, some of this leads to humor, as in a romantic triangle involving Paul, Christine and Nelson. Paul is Christine's husband, Nelson their macaw. Uh oh.

We watch Christine climb the stairs to turn in for the evening and see Nelson follow, then join her in bed. When Paul follows them to bed, Kroft notes, "Nelson's feathers get really ruffled." Is this jealousy? And how much awareness of themselves and their environments do animals have, and which of them are sentient? The extent of that consciousness is the focus of Part 3, in which Temple Grandin of Colorado State University, who appears to accept so-called food animals going to slaughter while designing more humane chutes for them, maintains that doomed cattle, for example, "just don't have any concept of what happens at a slaughterhouse." Yet that's in conflict with the obvious apprehension, and even terror, of animals just prior to being butchered in a documentary on slaughterhouses that Frederick Wiseman made some years ago. We also hear in the "Nature" documentary from a British biologist who believes that even bees, whose brains contain 860,000 cells, can be cognizant of their surroundings. "I'm quite sure," he says, "that when a honey bee is sitting on a comb at the end of a long day, she is running through pictures in her mind of the flowers that she has visited, of the places she has seen and of the weather conditions she has flown through." This is easy to scoff at. As is everything that challenges the common wisdom.

In other words, the moral questions raised by this documentary are profound. When humans are automatically anointed as a higher order, moreover, it's worth noting that we are that rare animal species that kills just for the thrill of it. Prime-Time TV Rankings ABC Passes Field With Bowls, Millennium Coverage is Bowl telecast.

CBS rebounded to score an easy win Sunday, as its lineup of "60 Minutes," "Touched by an Angel" and the movie "Beyond the Prairie: The True Story of Laura Ingalls Wilder" held down the week's top three spots against ABC's Fiesta Bowl coverage. "The Simpsons" also made a rare Top 10 appearance, with its most watched episode since January. Ratings for CBS' showing of the Kennedy Center Honors dropped 13 compared to 1998, although part of that had to do with airing on a Thursday, putting the annual special up against reruns of NBC's "Must-See TV" lineup. -BRIAN LOWRY ABC closed out the old year and rang in the new on winning notes, as its marathon millennium coverage and college football bowling teamed to provide the network an easy wceklong ratings victory, based on viewing estimates issued Tuesday by Nielsen Media Research. "ABC 2000," anchored by Peter Jennings, delivered the network's biggest New Year's Eve audience in nearly a decade since an edition of Monday Night Football aired in 1990 and exceeded the combined prime-time audience for NBC and CBS.

Tune-in for the Orange Bowl also paced ABC to first place on New Year's night, although ratings fell by 7 below last year's corresponding Sugar National Nielsen Viewershlp including a well-intentioned but daft elderly woman whose house is overflowing with cats that keep reproducing. Even more disturbing is a woman who has a terrible fit when the officers confiscate a rhesus monkey that she has retained in her house in violation of the city's law against keeping exotic animals. Your heart aches for the confused and terrified monkey, whose name is Ruby, as she is loaded into an ASPCA van for eventual relocation to a sanctuary in Texas. "She's my daughter!" the batty woman shrieks. A "daughter" that she had kept confined in a cabinet for years.

Here are the rankings for national prime-time network television last week (Dec. 27-Jan. 2) as compiled by Nielsen Media Research. They are based on the average number of people who watched a program from start to finish. Nielsen estimates that there are 260 million potential U.S.

The relationship between art and life is more trenchantly explored in "Suzanne Farrell: Elusive Muse," a 1997 Oscar-nominated feature documentary that not only gave dance its full value but also managed to be more probing about its subject's personal history. Taylor himself proved remarkably open about his sexuality in his book "Private Domain," so why is Diamond's film so closeted on the subject? "Dancemaker" becomes much, much better when following the Taylor company through rehears als and performances in New York and New Delhi, revealing the tensions and fears that a dancer's life generates. Reminiscences by former company members heighten the sense of physical and psychological vulnerability facing their current counterparts. The notion of professional dance as fun and games for beautiful children may persist despite the evidence, but Diamond does his best to kill it off here once and for all. Finally, there's a memorable sequence in which shots of Taylor dancing "Aureole" in 1962 merge with new footage of him rehearsing Patrick Corbin in the work a reminder of how fleeting and glorious a dancer's prime can be.

"Paul Taylor: Dancemaker" airs tonight at 8 on KCET-TV, as part of the PBS "American Masters" series. It will repeat Sunday at lp.m. By LEWIS SEGAL TIMES DANCE CRITIC Nominated in 1998 for an Academy Award as best documentary feature, Matthew Diamond's much praised "Paul Taylor Dancemaker" comes to the PBS "American Masters" series tonight, juxtaposing contemporary interviews and dancing footage with archival clips that link Taylor's present to his past. In a sense, the film may well belong to film editor Pam Wise more than to Diamond, for it represents an intricate mosaic of images and sound bites, many of them only a few seconds long. Unfortunately, this approach takes its toll on Taylor's choreographies; they are reduced to fragments and further marginalized by voice-over RADIO Los Angeles Times Reprints Rock-Urban p.m.-Rockllne, KCBS-FM (93.1).
