The last night of summer, 1962. Four ex-high school buddies (Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard, Paul Le Mat, Charles Martin Smith) who, without realizing it, are witnessing the end of an era, cruise through the nighttime San Rafael streets--their various adventures and romances underscored by the ironic, frantic voice of deejay Wolfman Jack spinning the music of Chuck Berry, the Beach Boys and Bill Haley and the Comets. Directed by George Lucas; with Cindy Williams, Candy Clark and Harrison Ford. At 9:45 p.m.: Cisco Pike (1971).

-director Bill Norton's film is a powerful lament for the grim death of all the hopes the early rock music scene embodied. Kris Kristofferson, in his screen debut as a passe rock idol, Gene Hackman as a cop who tries to blackmail him, and Karen Black as the girl too in love with Kristofferson to leave him are all excellent in this most evocative film. Norton will be on hand to discuss "Cisco Pike." And Payday (1972). Rip Torn plays a talented but self-destructive country singer. Directed by Daryl Duke.

Francis Ford Coppola and Mario Puzo's epic of the Mafia has become oneof Hollywood's great touchstone films. At 7:30 p.m.: The Godfather, Part (1974). This sequel to "The God-at that time Hollywood's biggest grosser-was a daring expansion. at LACMA's Bing Theater. clever variation on Antonioni's "Blowup" stars Gene Hackman as a professional bugger who becomes obsessed with a seemingly inconsequential lover's conversation. The film oozes paranoia and despair. And Night Moves (1975). One of the most unjustly neglected movies of the 1970s, this Arthur Penn film is a stunning, stylish detective mystery in the classic Raymond Chandler-Ross Macdonald mold.

The investigation of a murder by a tough yet vulnerable private eye (Hackman) becomes a quest for his own identity and apursuit for truth that cuts through many layers of social strata and endes with a wry sense of ironyu over the eternal treachery of human nature and one's own illusions. With Jennifer Warren, Susan Clark and Melanie Griffith. There will be a discussion between the two films with actor Allen Garfield and Variety editor Peter Bart. Artificial Humans in the Cinema (LACMA, Bing Theater, 5905 Wilshire 857-6010). RoboCop (1987).

This comic book-style sci-fi actioner about an automated cop in a futuristic Detroit where private industry has taken over the police is a ferocious, gleeful expertise. It's crammed with humor, cynicism and jolts of energy. The script nastily parodies everything from vacuous TV commentators to dope dealers to cutthroat corporate warfare; it satirizes a society--an exaggeration toward of our dehumanization own -where every tendency centralization has gone hellishly out of control; and it suggests that Robocop Murphy's private struggle between humanity and programming is a noble one.
