The Castilians were leading, 22-21, when Lower clinched victory for the visitors by firing a long-range field goal. 14 UP). Greg Rice did it again. Returning to the scene of his last indoor defeat in 1940, the barrel- chested former Notre Dame star now wearing the colors of the New York Athletic Club last night recorded his twenty-second straight indoor trimuph and at the same time rar the fastest two miles this city has ever seen, indoors or out. His time of 8:59.5 shattered the Penn A. C.

meet record of 9:06.3 he set last year." His world's indoor mark, made in Chicago last March, is 8:51.1. Fred Wilt of Indiana, the national collegiate champion, was second and Joe McCluskey of the New York Club, third. Two other meet records were low ered. Charles Beetham, National A. A.

U. champion at 880 yards, slashed his 1941 mark of 1:56.8 to 1:55.1. Fordham University's two-mile relay team of Andrew Lawrence, Joseph Novicki, Edward Shine, and Frank Leary came home in 7:46.3, far below Seton Hall's 1941 standard of 8:05.4. Although the time of 4:19.1 was disappointing, a true photo finish saved the feature event, the Pennac Mile, from being a complete failure. Campbell Kane of Indiana, national collegiate champion, came from be hind with a terrific sprint to edge John Borican, world's record-holder at 1,000 and 600 yards, by the small est of margins.

Norwood (Barney) Ewell of Penn State, triple IC4-A champion and national collegiate 100-yard dash titleholder, regained supremacy in the 50-yard dash. Tom East, who defeated Ewell last year, was third behind another Penn Stater, Donald Dolbin. It was the third time in four years that Ewell took the event. Fred Wolcott, the former Rice star, had no trouble in winning the 50-yard high hurdles for the second straight year. He was one-tenth of a second above his 1941 record of 6.1 seconds.

Feb. 14 (Special). The Milford Cardinals won an Eastern Shore Basketball League game over Seaford Y. M. A.

Thursday night, 47-27. Paul Chadick paced the Cardinals with eight field goals and a foul for 17 points MILFORD SEAFORD master granger, George Weiss, vice-president of the New York Yankees, but the pruning will be kept to a minimum. Last year the world champions controlled a dozen clubs and approximately 300 players in the minor leagues; this season they probably will work with 10 clubs and about 250 players. The reason, of course, is the war. Already the Yankee system has turned over 50 or 55 players to the military services, Weiss said, and some of the leagues in which it had franchises last year will not open the 1942 season.

"Right now we're in the dark and many of the leagues are just feeling their way along. Until we know which ones are going to operate and which ones aren't, we can't be very definite about our plans," he explained. We are going to try to keep as many leagues intact as possible and especially to preserve the strong ones and make them stable." This was a policy agreed upon by representatives of major league clubs with extensive farm systems at a recent meeting with William Bramham, persident of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues. At that time it was decided some "dead branches' necessarily would be trimmed from the minor league tree and that the big league clubs should concentrate their support in the sturdier circuits to make cer tain they didn all collapse as so nearly happened in the last war. Up till now, Weiss said, the Yank ees have formally withdrawn from only two cities Akron, in the Class Middle Atlantic League and Norfolk, in the Class D.

West ern League, which has folded. "We would have pulled out of Akron, war or no war," he said. "We had operated the club for sev eral years and taken some heavy losses and we made up our minds last fall to end what had proved to be an unsatisfactory arrangement." Weiss said he believed the St. Louis Cardinals, who operate more than a score of minor league clubs, also would have to curtail their minor league affiliations, although other big league clubs which have not built Up such large organizations have announced they would be affected only slightly.
