EVENING JOURNAL Monday, Dec. 7, 198 1 B3 Colts have that run-down feelini 7 By Tom Cobourn 1 (i I 1) 1 third touchdown of the game. Dickey's 20-yard run, identical to the 67-yarder but shorter, in third period pulled Baltimore to with two TDs at 27-13, but Septien's third field goal and James Jones' 59-yard run sealed the victory. McCormack, whose Colts were blasted by Philadelphia three weeks ago, was asked how good the Cowboys are. "When you're 1-13, 1 don't think I'm the man to answer that" Said Dickey, "I think Philly was tougher." Jones 59 run (Septien kick) TEAM STATISTICS therefore an extra seven days to heal before facing the Eagles. They were able to do that because of Dorsett, Springs and Colt mistakes. "It was still like any loss," said Coach Mike McCormack. "I think we learned in spots we can play with a good football team, but at the same time we can't make mistakes like we do and expect to win. We made an awful lot of mistakes, probably the most we made all season." Dallas was able to go with Glenn Carano at quarterback the entire way, using White solely for punting, thanks to an early lead that was never whittled to less than 11 points.

Carano hit only 7-of-l 8 passes for 51 yards, but the Cowboys didn't need much more. Like Dallas, Baltimore had some success on the ground, more suddenly than Dallas, though not as often. Curtis Dickey ran for a career-high 130 yards and two touchdowns to provide the Colts with more than half of their offense. With the knowledge that the game was being televised back to his home state of Texas, Dickey was the most explosive player on the field, flashing his old form with scoring runs of 67 and 20 yards for touchdowns. "Yeah, I wanted to have a nice game against the Cowboys," said Dickey.

"I feel pretty good today. The offensive line did a fine job blocking for me." "I though Curtis had an outstanding day," said McCormack. "I think he showed the kind of athlete he can be out there." He had to. The passing game had been turned over to newcomer David Humm, who replaced injured Bert Jones at quarterback. But Humm couldn't complete any of his first nine passes, having the first picked off to set up a Cowboy touchdown.

The left-hander finished with 90 yards passing, completing just 7-01-24 attempts. Afterwards, McCormack remarked that Humm showed some toughness during the game after a week's crash course in the Baltimore offensive playbook. Humm was just glad to get the chance to play for an entire game. "It was a lot of fun out there," said Humm. "Usually, I'd get in for a few plays, then have to go back to the bench." He said his poor start didn't upset him.

"I was still playing, which is better than what I was doing at home watching 'Tic Tac Doe'. Heck, I was out of work three months." It almost seems the Colts have been out of the AF East race that long. Humm made an inauspicious debut against the Cowboys, having a screen pass batted by Ed "Too Tall" Jones, with linebacker Bob Breunig intercepting the deflection at the Colt 17-yard line on the game's first play. Four plays later, Springs ran 1 yard for a touchdown. After Rafael Septien kicked a 42-yard field goal, Springs put Dallas ahead 17-0 with a 2-yard TD run.

While the first touchdown drive covered only 17 yards, this one took just 37. It was set up when Ricky Jones ran over the Cowboys' James Jones, who was attempting to catch a Colt punt, and was penalized 15 yards. Dickey then cut the lead to 17-6 (Mike Wood missed the extra point) when he broke through the middle of the Cowboy line and outraced the secondary 67 yards to the goal line. But Dallas came right back with a big play of their own, Pearson's flea-flicker pass to Hill to the Colt 9-yard line. Three plays later, Carano rolled right and hit Springs with a 3-yard pass for the fullback's Staff writer BALTIMORE Tony Dorsett spearheaded a ground attack that rolled up 354 yards and Ron Springs scored three touchdowns Sunday, leading the Dallas Cowboys to a 37-13 victory over the Baltimore Colts at Memorial Stadium.

Dorsett ran (he ball a career-high 30 times and the National Football League's leading rusher responded with a 175-yard afternoon, reaching his goal of 1,500 yards for the first time in five seasons. It wasn't a very good day to throw caution to the wind, especially one gusting at 25 mph, and certainly not when Dallas was resting its No. 1 quarterback, Danny White. After all, the Cowboys were supposed to be able to run against a 1-13 team like the Colts. The victory, coupled with Philadelphia's 15-13 loss to the Washington Redskins, put the 11-3 Cowboys two games ahead of the Eagles in the NFC East with two remaining.

Still, Dallas made sure it took care of business in Baltimore before looking ahead to their showdown with Philadelphia next Sunday. Give the Cowboys 10 days to prepare for any team and 13 out of 14 times they will come up with a victory. That's their record against their next opponents following Thanksgiving Day games. With so much time to prepare, the Cowboys leave no stone unturned, and they even inserted a "gadget" play to use against the Colts. They used it effectively Sunday, as flanker Drew Pearson took a lateral and passed to split end Tony Hill for 59 yards.

One of the Cowboys' main objectives was to give quarterback White, who suffered a cracked rib in the Thanksgiving Day game against Chicago, the day off and i J. New Orleans rookie George Rogers rushed for 98 yards but yielded the NFL rushing lead to Tony Dorsett of the Dallas Cowboys, who rushed for 175 yards in the Cowboys' 37-13 win over Baltimore to lift his total to 1,506. Denver built a 16-0 first-half lead that held up over Kansas City. The Broncos stopped a final Kansas City drive when linebacker Bob Swenson intercepted a Steve Fuller pass inside the Denver 20-yard line with two minutes left.

Kansas City's Nick Lowery missed a 58-yard field goal attempt in the final seconds. Denver quarterback Craig Morton, hit on 16 of 24 passes for 281 yards, including an 86-yard pass to Steve Watson which set up Denver's first TD and sparked Denver to its big early lead. Giants 10, Rams 7 Rob Carpenter scored on a 1-yard run, and Joe Danelo kicked a 19-yard field goal that broke a 7-7 tie early in the fourth quarter as the Giants handed the Rams their ninth loss of the season. New York trailed 7-0 until Carpenter's scoring dive evened the score early in the third quarter. With only two games left, the Rams are assured of their first losing season since 1972, when they went 6-7-1.

Cardinals 30, Saints 3 Neil Lomax, a rookie from Portland State, completed 10 straight passes as he led two scoring drives, and he ran 22 yards for a touchdown to beat the Saints, who dropped to snapped a three-game losing streak. Dolphins 24, Patriots 14 David Woodley, booed after sub--par performances in his previous two games, ran for one touchdown and threw for another to help Miami take control of the AFC East. The loss was the seventh in a row for New England, 2-12. Woodley snapped a 14-14 tie with 56 seconds left in the third quarter when he hit Eddie Hill on a 4-yard scoring play. It was the first touchdown pass in five games for Wood-ley, wno was ineffective in his past two appearances and was relieved by Don Strock.

Seahawks 27, Jets 23 The Jets, who began the day tied with Miami in the AFC East at 8-4-1, saw their Seahawks jinx continue. The Jets never have beaten Seattle, and second-year pro quarterback Dave Krieg of the Seahawks engineered Sunday's victory. Krieg, playing for the injured Jim Zorn, passed for two touchdowns and ran for another. Seattle trailed 23-20 when Krieg hit Steve Largent on a 57-yard scoring play with 8:21 to play. Bills 28, Chargers 27 Joe Cribbs ran 1 yard for a down with 3:37 left in the third period, giving Buffalo a 28-24 lead, and the Bills halted San Diego's last-gasp drive with a fumble recovery by cornerback Ruf us Bess with 1:54 to play.

San Diego led 21-14 at halftime, but Bills quarterback Joe Ferguson engineered scoring drives of 70 and 68 yards in the third quarter to keep Buffalo's playoff hopes alive. Broncos 16, Chiefs 13 Rob Lytle and Larry Canada scored on short runs to cap drives engineered by Craig Morton, and touchdown for the first time this season. Bucs 24, Falcons 23 Tampa Bay quarterback Doug Williams threw a 71-yard scoring pass to wide receiver Kevin House with 5.39 to play, and Atlanta's Mick Luckhurst missed a 45-yard field goal try with four seconds left in the game. The TD strike was Williams' second of the day and came four minutes after William Andrews ran 2 yards to give Atlanta a 23-17 lead. The loss left Atlanta at 7-7, four games behind San Francisco in the NFC West.

The Bucs went into the game in a three-way for the NFC Central lead with Detroit and Minnesota, all one game ahead of Green Bay. Open Daily 'MX, Wed.tFri. 'til Gilpin Ave. Rear Trolley Square 655-1776 Associated Press San Francisco wide receiver Dwight Clark felt the 49ers had something to prove, even though their record made them just as successful as the Cincinnati Bengals. "Cincinnati had been beating everybody by 20 points, and we had been beating everybody by three. So we came in here, and some people were saying that Cincinnati was going to blow us out," Clark said.

Clark helped prove the prognosti-cators wrong Sunday, catching one of Joe Montana's two touchdown passes to stop the Bengals 21-3, with the help of Cincinnati's six turnovers. The 49ers' 11-3 mark assures them of a first-round home field advantage in the National Conference playoffs. For the 10-4 Bengals, it's still a wait-and-see proposition. "Now it comes down to seeing what kind of a team we've got," said Cincinnati offensive tackle Anthony Munoz, looking ahead to what could become a pivotal game pext Sunday in Pittsburgh. A victory by the Steelers tonight against Oakland would move them just one game back of Cincinnati in the American Conference Central Division and set the stage for a showdown Sunday.

A victory could have clinched at least a wild-card playoff berth for Cincinnati on Sunday. But the Bengals lost three fumbles, three interceptions and starting quarterback Ken Anderson. Anderson sprained the big toe on his right foot early in the third quarter and was replaced by Jack Thompson. On crutches in the dressing room, Anderson said he wasn't sure whether he'd be able to play next Sunday. "We had enough bad breaks today for a whole year," said Bengals' tight end Dan Ross, who caught seven passes to establish a new club record with 65 receptions in a season.

"Everything went wrong. "We moved the ball well, but we stopped ourselves. We'd move the ball, then get a penalty. Then we'd move the ball again, and fumble. It just snowballed." The Bengals turned the ball over twice inside the San Francisco 10 yard line in an uncharacteristic show of generosity.

Cincinnati had given up just eight fumbles and seven interceptions in its previous 13 games. "Our team hits, and we continue to surprise the opposition," said 49ers Coach Bill Walsh. "I think we hit as hard as anybody in football, and play as tough a defense as is played. Offensively, I can't say we're the most artistic team in the league, but we play opportunistic football." Montana completed 23 of 34 passes for 187 yards. He threw touchdown passes of four yards to fullback Bill Ring and 15 yards to Clark in the first half, then dove one yard for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Jim Breech's 30-yard field goal in the second quarter was the only score for Cincinnati, held without a Biesinger lifts Bobcats WASHINGTON, D.C The Delaware Bobcats defeated the Wash' ington Budweiser-Redcoats 3-1 behind B.C.
