IN MEMORIAM EVENING JOURNAL Monday, July 27, 1981 2nd-EDjTIQN MM Dover woman, 21, killed when car runs off the road, rolls over her Washington G)llege president Joseph H. McLain dies at 65 C3 said. State police said they weren't sure whether Mrs. Marvel or her husband was driving the car. The death brings to 55 the number of people killed on Delaware roads this year, compared with 76 at the same time last year.

Mrs. Marvel, a 1977 graduate of Caesar Rodney High School, was unemployed. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her parents, Edward and Dauthine Palenski, and a brother, Edward Palenski all of the Rodney Village address. Services will be Tuesday afternoon at 2 at the Torbert Funeral Home, Bradford and Reed streets. There will be no viewing.

Burial will be private. before Sunday morning services were to begin, fire officials said. The blaze at the church, located on Sussex 78 about four miles southwest of Seaford, caused more than $50,000 in damage to a 7-year-old addition that housed the church's Sunday school, said James L. Cub-bage deputy state fire marshal. An investigation is continuing, but the cause "appears to be accidental," he said.

A spokesman for the Blades Fire Company said the fire apparently was caused by an "electrical shortage." Congregants at the 120-member church held services on the cemetery grounds behind the church from 9 30 to 10 a said the pastor, the Rev. J. Ronald Owens. "There were tears, but nobody was in hysterics," Owens said. "They were just sad and shocked.

Everybody is working very hard to make sure that we go on from here." Claymont station is gutted by fire The state fire marshal's office is investigating the cause of a fire that gutted the Claymont train station about 11 p.m. Saturday. The fire interrupted Conrail freight service for about 90 minutes. Rail traffic was halted so water hoses could be stretched across the tracks. Only the framework of the station remained this morning, and that was expected to be bulldozed.

McLain, president of Washington College since 1973, died Saturday at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, after a short illness. Mr. McLain, 65, graduated from the small liberal arts school in 1937. He taught chemistry there for nearly 30 years and served as chairman of the chemistry department. In 1973, he became the first alumnus to serve as the school's president.

The lanky, white-haired man with the friendly grin was known to students at the college even those who weren't studying his beloved chemistry as "Doc." "He was very, very friendly to the students," said John Conkling, a chemistry professor who once studied under Mr. McLain. "He was very popular with them." He died as the school was beginning its bicentennial celebration, which he had looked forward to and helped plan for years. "He really did devote his life to the college," said his daughter, Lynn Cook. Mr.

McLain was born in West Virginia but grew up in Baltimore. He chose to attend Washington College, perhaps, his family said, because an older brother had preceded him there. He fell in love with the town and the college. He was president of his senior class and of his fraternity. After receiving his bachelor's degree, he began graduate work at Johns Hopkins University, but his studies were interrupted by World War II.

He was a major in the Army chemical corps at Aberdeen Proving Ground. His specialty, Conkling said, was developing smokes for troops to use as smokescreens. In 1946, he received his doctorate from Johns Hopkins and began teaching at Washington College. He also became a partner in Kent Manufacturing a Chestertown plant that developed fireworks and explosives. In July 1954, an explosion at the plant killed 11 employees.

Mr. McLain, who was in the building at the time, rescued two women and almost got trapped himself. "We paid all the claims and dis- Catherine A. Gary Catherine A. He went to New York as a researcher for Olin Mathieson Chemical, but found that "empty work" and returned to teaching after a year. He became chairman of Washington College's chemistry department, and, in 1965, the graduating class voted him the school's annual Lindback Award for distinguished teaching. He was named acting dean of the college in 1972, then acting president and president. He was chairman of the Baltimore branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond and of the Governor's Science Advisory Committee.

He also was former president of the Kent County Board of Education and first chairman of the state Water Pollution Commission. Mr. McLain had become less active in recent months, when he began treatment for cancer at Hopkins. He told few people about his illness, and continued his activities as president.

He participated in graduation ceremonies, and recently was awarded an honorary doctoral degree from Salisbury State College. In June, however, the Board of Visitors and Governors granted Mr. McLain temporary leave because of his illness and named Garry Clarke, dean of the college, as acting president.
