Vrij, Associated Press Hank Snow in 1985 lic, studied for six years to earn certification as a Religious Science minister, and in 1987 abandoned radio to become minister of the Sherman Oaks Church of Religious Science. He later served the organization's Santa Clarita Church. "There's a strong element of showmanship in all successful ministries," the Rev. have to move people in some way. Coming from radio, Ron already knew how to do that." Enamored in childhood of live dramatic shows on radio, McCoy landed his first radio job at age 12 on a local station in his native Denver. He acted the boyhood voices of famous artists on a show called "Art Speaks Your Language" and voiced parts in little plays about farm life on a Saturday agricultural show. After more on-the-job training in an Office of War Information radio drama workshop during World War II, he studied economics and history at the University of Denver, intending to go into radio news. But his first job as an adult was in entertainment radio as a disc jockey at Salt Lake City station KALL.

Four years later, in 1958, he moved to Los Angeles as a deejay at KLAC. In 1961, he switched to KFI and began his long stint on talk radio. The subjects under discussion, despite strict limits set by station management, ranged from politics to the mundane, or what McCoy always labeled "fudge brownie recipes." "The 1960s were a very controversial time: hippies, the Vietnam War, assassinations, drugs and sex," McCoy told The Times in 1989. "But KFI management had a strict policy against anything controversial. Comedian Joey Adams was on when Ronald Reagan was running for governor and a caller asked him if actors should go into politics.

'Why says Adams. 'Most politicians are clowns "Management didn't let me have a guest for two months after that one," McCoy said. "KFI thought I was incompetent and couldn't handle my guests." After leaving KFI, McCoy had other talk shows successively on hopping aboard a train to leave a lover would become the biggest hit of the year and would eventually be recorded in 36 languages. Among the artists who recorded the song were Elvis Presley, Ray Charles and Emmylou Harris. The success of that hit launched Snow on a prolific career that would see him record more than 100 albums and log hits through 1980.

Among his best-known songs: "I've Been Everywhere," "(Now and Then, There's) A Fool Such As "I Don't Hurt Anymore," "Hello Love," "Let Me Go Lover" and "Golden Rocket." Snow is largely unknown to many of today's country music fans, even those who are familiar with Hank Williams Tubb, Roy Acuff and other stars of the 1940s and 1950s, and that's a regrettable blind spot, said Willie Nelson, who recorded a 1985 duet album with Snow. "When you talk about traditional country music, Hank Snow is right in the middle of that picture," Nelson told The Times on Monday. "It's people's loss if they don't hear it, because Hank Snow music is the traditional country in its greatest form. It's really a shame that everyone doesn't know this music." Kyle Young, the director of the Country Music Hall of Fame, on Monday called Snow "one of the best songwriters in the history of the music" and added that Snow's use of By GEOFF BOUCHER jlMES STAFF WRITER I Country music's flamboyant fSinging Ranger," Hank Snow, who was born in a tiny Canadian fishing village but created a half-century Nashville career with his rjhinestone suits and rollicking hits such as "I'm Movin' On," died Monday, He was 85. k.
