According to amusement park industry statistics, 80 of thrill ride accidents can be blamed on riders. But the Knott's accident, along with a series of problems at other parks, "have reversed that trend recently," Falfas acknowledged. The accidents have included one that killed a tourist at Disneyland on Christmas Eve which state officials blamed on an inadequately trained worker as well as a double-fatality Saturday on a roller coaster in New Jersey that apparently malfunctioned.

Another fatality occurred at Paramount's Great America in Santa Clara on Aug. 22, when a mentally and physically disabled 12-year-old slipped out of a ride and plunged to his death as his mother looked on. Santa Clara police said that they are investigating statements by witnesses that a park safety worker did not check whether the boy was seated properly on the ride. A California Senate committee last week voted to require statewide inspections of all amusement park rides, legislation prompted by the Disneyland Continued from Bl About 2 inches wide by 2 inches deep, the board that shook loose was on the top layer of a stack of lumber that the ride travels over. The board was partly decorative and was used to keep the track width the same through the curve.

Similar pieces of wood have been used on wooden coasters since at least the 1920s, said Brown, who added that it was a "freak accident" that a nail holding the board wiggled loose, allowing it to pop up, become caught on the coaster and then thrown into the air, striking visitors. The ride manufacturer, Custom Coaster Inc. of Cincinnati, had recommended that each of the hundreds of similar pieces of wood be secured with long, ribbed nails. Knott's General Manager Jack Falfas said the park did that and took the extra step of securing each piece with three metal straps, so the pieces cannot come loose even if the nails do. "That same failure can't happen again," Brown said as trains stocked with dummies were launched on test rides before GhostRider reopened.

The ride's closure cut into attendance during the peak summer season, Falfas said. The ride will be closed to the public in late September and again HICHAHDHAH'KXi Los Angeles Times Winning Horses: (1) Gold Rush (4) Big Ben (10) Solid Gold Race Time: 1:46.75 To win the grand prize, ticket-holders must match, in exact order, the first, -second- and third-place horses and the winning race time. By contrast, St. Hedwig Catholic Church, only a quarter-mile from St. Isidore, serves 3,089 families, has three full-time priests and already offers five services each Sunday. The diocese proposes combining the churches by adding a sixth service at 1:30 p.m.

to accommodate St. Isidore worshipers. Currently, services at St. Hedwig are in English, But some say they won't feel as comfortable praying at St. Hedwig, Gray-haired men in their 70s remember when they were altar boys at St.

Isidore. Grandparents have seen their children and grandchildren baptized in its small chapel. Simon Salas finds it difficult to believe the church will close. And he doesn't believe an earthquake could ever destroy it. The church has survived so many upheavals before.

Fieldworkers built the church in 1922 on donated land. After the 1933 Long Beach earthquake, parishioners rebuilt it with money earned in part from selling tamales. And in the early 1960s, church officials tried to close St. Isidore and move congregants to St. Hedwig.

But the community persuaded officials to reopen it in 1962. "If it did crumble, it would take lived within walking distance of the church; English classes there taught her parents the language of their new country. Church yard sales made clothes affordable for the family of eight, and church-sponsored field trips introduced them to Disneyland and camp. "There was so much joy they brought us. If we needed help someone was always there," Gallardo said.

Over the years, the church's offerings to the community began to dwindle. Three services on Sunday fell to one, and there no longer are catechism classes for the young. But the spirit of compassion and community still remains at St. Isidore, Gallardo said, And it is the spirit of iheir religion and not the building thai houses it that woishiptis veff reminded to cherish in Sunday's sermon by Father Agustin Escovar. In a baritone that easily filled the small room, Escovar warned that it is tempting, in times of trial, to feel let down and to pull away from God.

"But the experience of God must defines itself in moments of suffo ing. Suffering is inevitable, ar i it is impossible to follow the Lore without carrying the cross," he said. Should the doors of Isidore close, Escovar urged listeners i remember that they, not the building they love, are the Irae houses of God's spirit. Los Angeles Times such an earthquake that everything else would be destroyed too, so then it wouldn't matter to anyone," Simon Salas said. Since the diocese announced the closure, a church group called Com-ite del Amor, or Committee of Love, has been working to save it.

On Saturday the group met for three hours with church officials but went away with no verdict. Committee member Lorena Gal-lardo, 33, had hoped the church would be the center of life for her five children, the way it was for her when she was a little girl.
