"It's definitely a major loss," said Ed Maley, the Blue Hen defensive coordinator who used Witherspoon at all three linebacker spots. "I've always felt that (with) Ali, along with (Shawn) Riley, (Gregg) Robertson and (Joe) Quigg, that we had four starters at linebacker." Witherspoon will remain at Delaware as a non-degree candidate in the school's continuing education program and will be eligible for readmission in an active undergraduate program next February. He will have one year athletic eligibility remaining. A pair of unbeaten reigning national champions were to square off today in Newark when the Blue Hen women's lacrosse team met Temple.

Delaware, 7-0, was the 1982 Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Division II champion, but has stepped into the AIAW Division I ranks in 1983. Temple, 8-0-2, is the defending AIAW titlist in Division I. The Blue Hen women are riding a 14-game winning streak stretching back to their 5-4 loss to Temple last season in Philadelphia. Temple is unbeaten in its last 13 games. Delaware's Steve Bastianelli and Dave DeWalt have been named to Amateur Wrestling News' 1982-83 All-America freshmen team in their respective weights.

Six wrestlers are selected in each of the 10 weights, Bastianelli is listed at 134 and DeWalt at 177. After two consecutive postponements, Delaware's baseball team was scheduled to resume its season at home today against Drexel. The Blue Hens play at Drexel Friday. Delaware's annual spring football game, scheduled for May 7 in Delaware Stadium, will be televised and broadcast on a delayed basis by Rollins Cablevision Channel 19. The show will be produced by SpectroVision Video with Matt Likovich and Chris Michaels doing the play-by-play and color, respectively.

The first scheduled time will be 9:30 p.m., May 9. Two Blue Hen prospects, Anthony Tolbert of Grand Army of the Republic High in Wilkes-Barre, and Huntingdon's Mike Hudy will participate in the summer's Big 33 All-Star Game. The annual contest is considered to be Pennslvania's premier prep all-star football gathering. "Hopefully, the team will gain something from this, that being that going to college is a special opportunity and should be regarded as special." The 6-foot, 215 Witherspoon had been participating in the Blue Hens' spring football drills through last Saturday. He could not be reached for comment. Raymond, whose father Tubby Raymond is head football coach at the University of Delaware, began his new assignment Friday after spending the last two seasons with Ron Rogerson at the University of Maine in Orono. Rogerson was a former Delaware aide under Tubby Raymond.

"I'm very excited," the 29-year-old Raymond said in a telephone interview. "It's a move I had to make. My goal all along has been to become a head coach and an opportunity doesn't come along that often." At Colby, Raymond will direct a Division ill program that has not produced a winning record since 1979. Last season, under Tom Kopp, who stepped down after five years to take a full-time position in the school's admissions office, the Mule football team was 1-7. But while Raymond may have some rebuilding to do, at least the rudiments of the Wing-T are already there for him and the three full-time assistants he retained from Kopp's staff.

"They put the Wing-T in last season," Raymond said. "They came over and got it from us at Orono." In returning to the New England Small College Athletic Conference, where he spent a year as a graduate assistant with Don Miller at Trinity seven years ago, Raymond becomes the league's third head coach with Delaware ties. Miller, a former Little All-America quarterback at Delaware, is still at Trinity, and former Blue Hen receiver Mickey Heinecken is at Middlebury. Raymond has the two schools back-to-back on his 1983 schedule, plus he also is in the same conference with Tufts, where he was an assistant coach for three years. Tubby Raymond, whom Chris assisted for two seasons before-leaving for Maine, was delighted by the news of his son's new assignment.

"I always had hopes of him being an architect," quipped Raymond of Chris, who was graduated from Virginia in 1975 with a degree in architecture. "But I'm obviously extremely pleased. "After all, he beat me by 10 years," said Raymond, who was 38 when he became head coach of the Blue Hens in 1966. At Maine, Rogerson has altered his staff format, rather than name a new offensive coordinator. He has hired Mike Hodgson, a former St.

Mark's High athlete, to coach Maine's offensive line; selected Steve Tosches as the Black Bear backfield coach, and has taken personal charge of the receivers. a name to build on Since 1957...
