Tuesday, Oct 12, 1982 The) News-Journal Papers IN MEMORIAM Obitucrics Frank F. Pierson, who led fight against lung disease, dies at 80 Edgar Simpson Edgar C. Simpson, 60, of 201 Bungalow Elsmere, died Monday of cancer at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Elsmere. Mr. Simpson retired in 1977 after working as a machinist for 32 years, most recently for Amtrak.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia L. Simpson; two stepsons, William T. Reihms of Clayton and David E. Reihms of New Castle; four brothers, George W. of Wilmington, Harry J.

of Marshallton, John J. of Elsmere and Thomas of New Brunswick, N.J.; a sister, Harriet Joseph of Hartly; and five step-grandchildren. Services will be Wednesday afternoon at 1 at the Krienen-Grif-fith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Highway, Elsmere, where friends Nellie Vahey Toomey Nellie Vahey Toomey, 77, of 5914 Franklin Baltimore, died of cancer Sunday in St Agnes Hospital in Baltimore. Mrs. Toomey retired in 1970 after 30 years as a member of the house staff of Elizabeth Haskell Fleitas of Greenville.

She was born in County Mayo, Ireland, and came to this country in 1928. She lived in Baltimore for the past four years with her sister. Mrs. Toomey's husband, Hugh died in 1953. She is survived by her daughter, Sister Stephana Toomey of the Dominican Order of Baltimore, with whom she lived; four brothers; Michael Vahey of Greenville, Anthony Vahey of Centreville, John Vahey of County Mayo, Ireland, and Patrick Vahey of South-port, England, and a sister, Mrs.

Jane McGill of Pittsburgh. Services will be Wednesday tary of the society, in charge of the Dover office. In his first year, he was project director of the Delaware chest X-ray program. He was instrumental in the turberculosis-control program among migrant workers and in a rehabilitation program for tuberculosis patients at the Emily P. Bissell Hospital.

He was one of the founders of the Inter-Agency Council for Smoking and Health. He is survived by his wife, Ethel a son, Frank M. of Columbus, Ohio; a brother, Dr. John and a sister, Mrs. Bayard W.

Epps, 65, of near New- Kirt, died Friday at the Delaware ivision after a heart attack at home. Mr. Epps retired in 1963 after serving 21 years as a chief warrant officer in the transportation division of the U.S. Army. He is survived by his wife, Virginia W. Gilbert, 62, of 758 Christiana Road, Newark, died Sunday in the Veterans Administration Hospital of heart failure. Mr. Gilbert retired in 1969 as a painter with Local 100 of the Painters Union, and also worked for Local 313 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He is survived by three daughters, Janet Murphy of Coventry and Carol Dunn and Wilma Gilbert Smith, both of Avondale, and five grandchildren. Smith, 66, of Magnolia, died Friday at the Milford Memorial Hospital after a heart attack at his home. Mr. Smith retired on disability in 1970 as a civilian employee at Dover Air Force Base. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; four sons, Charles B.

of Fre-derica, Larry D. of Milford, Jerry of Hatfield, and Don B. of Mag-nolia; two daughters, Kathryn Chadwell of Bridgeville and Pat Bouchard of York, two brothers, Joe and Delon, both of Nashville; two sisters, Mae Hudgens of Nashville and Irene Edmonds of Sparta, and four grandchildren. J. Burton Anderson J. Burton Anderson, 78, of 40 Cedar View Court, Millville, N.J., died Sunday of lung cancer at home. Mr. Anderson retired many years ago after 33 years as a driver-salesman with the Huber Baking Co.

in Millville. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Millville, and also belonged to Schekinah Lodge 58, Mr. Anderson lived in Elkton, before moving to Millville about 50 years ago. He is survived by his wife Thelma; a son, Allen of Millville; a brother, Gilbert L.

Paul's Lutheran Church, Third and Mulberry streets, Millville, N.J. 08332. Frank F. Pierson 80, of Ormond Beach, former executive secretary of the Delaware Tuberculosis and Health Society, now the Delaware Lung Association, died of cancer Sunday in Ormond Beach Memorial Hospital. Mr.

Pierson was born and reared in Wilmington, a family spokesman said. He retired from the society in 1963, after working there since 1954. He was in the Navy's hospital rehabilitation program during World War II, and after the war entered rehabilitation and tuberculosis work with the government on the West Coast. Mr. Pierson came to Delaware in 1953 as assistant executive secre Police Police report three robberies, one attempt Wilmington Police today reported three robberies and an attempted robbery.

Michael P. O'Boyle, 42, visiting from Hershey, told police had just left a private club at Todds Lane and Edgemoor Ave. about 2:15 this morning when he was knocked down by a man with a gun and robbed of $50. About 10:15 a.m. Monday Patricia Gignac, 31, of the Cavalier Country Club Apartments, was getting into her car near Fifth and Pine streets when a man wearing a ski mask and carrying a pistol tried to rob her, police said.

She screamed and frightened the man away. Police searched the area and arrested Michael S. Carter, 20, of the 500 block of New Castle in a nearby apartment building. He was charged with attempted robbery and jailed under $5,000 bail. About 7:35 p.m.

Monday, Michael Allebach, 36, of Newark was working at the Blue Rock Market in the 2900 block of Northeast Blvd. when a customer asked for a can of sardines, pulled a butcher knife, and called for an accomplice to grab all the money about $130 from the cash register. Shortly after 11:30 p.m., William E. Jackson, 29, of the 500 block of N. Rodney was jumped near Third and Van Buren streets by two men who stole cash from his wallet.

Jackson was treated at the Delaware Division for scrapes and bruises. City police thwart rape try, nab suspect Two Wilmington police officers on patrol in the 500 block of Garaches Lane thwarted an alleged rape attempt late Sunday night, police said. Samuel Hicklin, 28, of the 600 block of Washington was charged with attempted rape, kidnapping and possession of marijuana after the incident, and jailed under $6,000 bail, a Municipal Court spokesman said. Police said Officers Nancy Spell and Dean Vietri came upon the attack while patrolling the area. A 22-year-old woman ran to their car and told them Hicklin was attacking her.

Man held in 2 rapes of handicapped girl A Wilmington man has been sent to Delaware Correctional Center under $50,000 bail in connection with the rape of a 16-year-old handicapped girl, police said. The suspect, Daniel Redden, 19, of the 1500 block of E. 27th was charged with two counts each of rape and kidnap. Police said the girl was attacked twice in her Wilmington home, in December 1981 and last July.

Her family had befriended Redden, and the girl didn't report the attacks until recently because Redden allegedly threatened her, police said. Police crack down on underage drinking State, police have made 12 arrests in Brandywine Hundred as part of a crackdown on underage drinking and plan to continue the effort next weekend. Police said two juveniles were arrested Friday night by plainclothes officers outside the Naamans Beverage Mart 109 Naamans Road, Claymont; and five more youths were arrested outside Marsh Road Liquors store, 1727 Marsh Road. Five youths were arrested at Claymont High School on possession of alcohol charges, and 12 more on charges of loitering on state property. George Emma P. George, 99, of Brandy-wine Springs Nursing Home, Marshallton, formerly of Prospect Avenue, Marshallton, died Sunday in the Memorial Division of natural causes. Mrs. George's husband, Daniel, died in 1952. She has no immediate survivors.

Ethel Pierson Draine Ethel Pierson Draine, 89, of 110 Cleveland McDaniel Heights, died of heart failure Monday in the Delaware Division. Mrs.

Drane was a former Worthy Matron of the Mizpath Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in Wilmington. Her husband, Henry died in 1976. She is survived by a sister, Dorothea M. McClure of McDaniel Heights. Services will be Thursday morn, ing at 11 at the McCrery Memorial Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Talleyville.

Burial will be private. TVfarcin I fovr Martin J. Joyce 63, of 1401 Maryland died of a heart attack Sunday in the Delaware Division. Mr. Joyce retired in 1973 after working 25 years as a plumber for Plumbers Local 26 of the united Association of Journeymen Plumbers Pipe Fitters.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II. His wife Lucy K. died in 1950. He is survived by a son, Martin Jr. of Lexington, a brother, Richard of Wilmington; two sisters, Rita Bogia and Ann Marroni, both of Wilmington; and two grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Wednesday morning at 10 in St. Mary Magdalen Church, Sharpley. Friends may call tonight at the John F. Yasik Funeral Home, 607 S. Harrison St.
