IDAHO SUNDAY JOURNAL Sunday, Dectmber 7, 19S8-13 Idaho State Swamps Montana State 72-56 for Win Portland Edges Utah State 68-66 to Win Tourney Panel Paces Pilots To Tourney Crown Walley Panel scored 21 points to give his Portland Pilots a 68-65 victory over Utah State of the Skyline conference and the championship of the third annual Idaho State College Invitational Basketball Tournament Saturday night. Sophomore guard of Utah State 100,000 Watch Rams Top Colts LOS ANGELES (UPI) The Los Angeles. Rams utilized their favorite play the Bill Wade to Del Shofner pass to defeat, the Baltimore Colls. 30-28 Saturday in a National Football League game before the third largest crowd in pro history. The game was in effect a futile effort as the Colts already have cinched the western division NFL championship.

But it did set a record of sorts making the Rams the first team in NFL history ot play before two 100,000 crowds in the same season. A crowd of 100, 202 watched the nip-and-tuck hall game which saw the Rams take over Ihe lead in the final seconds of the i half and then hold on for the two- point victory. The other crowd came five weeks ago for the Ram- Chicago Bear game in the Coliseum. 69- Yard Pass The Wadc-to-Shofncr combination scored one touchdown, a 69- yard flanker pass play early in the fourth quarter, while a 63-yard Wade to Shofner aerial set up the Rams' first TD on the Baltimore two-yard line. Halfback Tom Wilson plunged 'into the end zone for the first score from that point.

For Ihe first quarter, it appeared that the Rams wore in for the same type shellacking they took at Baltimore two weeks ago, when Ihe Colts won, 34-7. The Colts scored with the game only minutes old after Gino Maichelti recovered a -Wade fumble on the Ram 30-yard line. Pass for TD The Baltimore score came on the first of Baltimore quarterback Johnny Unitas' three touchdown passes from the three-yard line, with end Ray Berry taking the aerial behind the goal posts. The Colts scored handily again right before the period ended, marching 62 yards in 12 plays, with Unitas tossing a five-yard pass to fiis favorite target, Lennic Moore. But then the Rams regrouped and struck quickly with two touchdowns, first Wilson's and then a 12-yard pass interception return by linebacker Dick Daughcrty.

This, coupled with a 43-yard Paige Cothrcn field goal, gave the Rams a 16-14 lead at halftime. Wade won his passing duel with Unitas, completing 11 for 26, while two interceptions, for a total of 257 yards. Unitas hit on 23 of 33 for 214. Wade's efforts set two new Ram passing marks. made a last second desperate shot lut failed to send Ihe game into overtime.

Portland University defeated Montana State in the opening game of the lourney to move into Ihe tals. Panel, a 5-11 guard put on a one- man show in Ihe second half when score was tied at 43-43. He hit a jump shot to put the Pilots out front 50-48. Panel then stole Ihe I right back from Ihe Aggies and was credited with another two Doints when Harold Theus, Farmer forward, was called with goal tending. The Pilots were never beaded after they grabbed the 52 48 lead.

The Aggies came back and moved to within two points at 6S-66 but couldn't make a last play work with only 14 seconds left in the game when Perry missed the shot. Portland had a 55-49 lead with two minutes remaining and the game Utah Staters closed the gap. The Aggies were paced by center Bob Ipsen with 21 points and Perry with 19 counters. Elmen Bloedel was second high scorer for Portland with 12 points. The Pilots from the northwest led at halflime 31 to 27.

Montana State Wins First in Rifle Meet Montana State's rifle team won the first annual Bengal Trophy Matches at Idaho Stale College Friday. The matches were sponsored by the department of military science and tactics at ISC in conjunction with the Invitational Basketball HITS AGAIN Jim' Rodgers, Idaho State guard hits field goal in Bengal win over Montana State. Rodgers led the team in scoring with 21 points. Boston College Wins 28 to BOSTON (UPI) Sophomore quarterback Johnny Amabile scored once and passed for another ally in a three-touchdown second- quarter explosion Saturday to load Boston College to a 2C 8 upset win over Holy Cross. The 5-7 Gamecock engineer per- ormed brilliantly as a replacement for the injured Eagle passing ace, Don Allard, before a capacity crowd of 26,000.

Boston College capitalized early on the passes of vaunted Holy Cross quarterback Tommy Greene, intercepting three of his first four throws. The Eagles converted two of Ihe interceptions into touch- Greene's only first-half completion was a 55-yard scoring strike lo end Dave Stccchi in the period for the only Holy Cross touchdown. The win gave Boston College a 27-25-3 edge in Ihe series, which began in 189G, and snapped a two- game Crusnder streak. He was held to only one field goal for a two- point output during Ihe half. Christian grabbed a good num- ier of reboun'ds and played one of he finest defensive games of his career at ISC. It was a different ball club Sat- rday night than played Utah Itale Friday evening. The team lad more poise and as soon as hey started getting their range it was a team that ran all over 3obcats. With the slarl of Ihe second half the Bengals didn't stop increasing the lead.

They pulled It a 50 ot 25 lead with 14 minutes remaining in the scoring 20 points to only four lor the Bobcats.
