POCATELLO, IDAHO, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1975 IDAHO STATE JOURNAL-SECTIOM A-PAGE 7 TAZ' MAKES SWITCH Red Sox Figure It's New Season By DAVE O'HAKA AP Sports Writer BOSTON (AP) The chalked message on the board in the Boston Red Sox' clubhouse says it all: "7 Wins in October." That, of course, would mean the American League pennant and the World Series championship. "Yen, thai seven sounds like a nice figure," Cecil Cooper said Thursday after learning he would play first base instead of being the designated hitter. "Now we have to go out and do it." Heading into their best-of-five league championship series with the Oakland A's, (he Red Sox figure they're starting a new, but shorter, season. In other words, and coining a cliche, it's a brand new ball game. However, they're confident, just as they have been all year, without making open predictions.

"You just can't make any predictions." said veteran Carl Yastrzemski, who led the Red Sox to their last pennant in 1967. "Sure, I predicted we'd win in 1967, but that was when no one gave us a chance. It was one of those things. Now? I've been in this game too long and have seen too many things happen. "The main thing now is to go on the field and win a pennant.

Then we can think about the World Series." Yastrzemski, 36 and completing his 15th season with the Red Sox, faces a new challenge in the showdown with the A's starting Saturday. The regular first baseman this year is returning to left field with the first two games set for Fenway Park and its chummy wall. "It's no big tiling," Yaz in- sisted. "What the heck, I played oat there for 14 years before moving to first base. I'm noi worried about the wail.

I don't think I'll have any problems." "We decided that we would be stronger defensively with Carl in left," Manager Darrell Johnson' said. "He knows that wall Hke the back of his hand." With Yaz going to left, Cooper will take over at first instead of playing his usual role as designated hitter. Juan Beniquez will lead off for Boston as the Dri. Less than two weeks ago, the Red Sox line-up for postseason, action appeared set with rookie Jim Rice in left, Yaz at first and Cooper the DH. However, Rice was sidelined for the year Sept.

21 when he suffered a broken hand. So the stage is set for the big series between the Red Sox, the East Division champs, and the A's, perennial winners in the West aiming for a fourth consecutive World Series victory. The twj teams broke even in 12 games during the regular season, but Boston supporters are quick to note that three of th? Red Sox' losses were by one run and two by two runs. Although plagued by a hack ailment much of the season, Boston right-hander Luis Tiant, 18-14, is rested and ready to face the mighty A's in the Saturday opener. He will be opposed on the mound by lefthander Ken Holtzman.

1.8-14. "My back feels good," Tiant said. "I'm still taking pills at night to ease all the muscles, but I've been running and everything is okay. I just want to go out and do my best. That's all vou can do." Reds, Pirates Set Showdown for Pennant LEFT FIELD PR ACTICE--Veteran Boston Red Sox slugger Carl Yastrzemski fields ball off left field wall Thursday during workout at Fenway Park for American League championship series stalling Saturday.

Yastrzemski rejoined the Red Sox after a four-day vacation in Florida and met with Manager Darrell Johnson and agreed to play left field. (AP Wirephoto) CINCINNATI (API Joe Morgan, chief generator of excitement for Cincinnati's onrushing Reds, shivered in the cfcill of wind-whipped i erfront Stadium Thursday and paid cool respect to the Pittsburgh Pirates. "Pittsburgh will hit you to death if they can," said Morgan as the Reds rehearsed for Saturday's opening game of the National League playoffs, adding that whenever you give the Pirates an opening "the next thing you know they have seven straight hils." "We have to guard against getting one or two outs and then letting down," he said. Morgan agreed that power will play a more dominant role than pitching, but he thinks Cincinnati's speed could prove a pivotal OUTDOOR TIPS To STOP YOUR DOS FROM FI3HTIWS, CHASING CAKS OK TURWIN6 OVER THE GARBA6E, k'EEP A JAR WITH A SOLUTION OP I PART AMMONIA TO 4 PARTS Bowling 5furs Seek Jackpot In ISBA's Rowland Tourney The finest compete THEN GIVE HIM A COUPLE OF SQUIRTS WITH YOUR CHILD'S WATER GUN WHEN HE STARTS TO MISBEHAVE Highland Clobber Mlnko RUPERT--Tom Parks and Terrel Kolsen each scored touchdowns and the Ram defense smothered the Minico Spartans' attack as the Highland sophomores rolled to a convincing 34-0 win Thursday TailbacK Parks, Highland's leading rusher for the game with 120 yards, scored, on a six- yard run and on a 35-yard pass play from quarterback John Kaiivas. Parks also added a two-point conversion.

Kaiivas also fired touchdown strikes of 18 and 35 yards to Kolsen. The Ram defense, which picked off four enemy aerials, accounted for Highland's other score as Brent Gull blocked a Spartan punt and teammate Tracy Carman fell on it in the end zone. Brent Bowman added two conversions as Highland upped its record to 4-1. Minico's only threat, came midway in the fourth quarter but an interception stopped the drive at the 20. In addition to professional star Don Johnson, a number of top Idaho bowlers will be on hand for the Idaho Scratch Bowlers Association classic. Although it is almost impossible to pick a favorite, one name area bowlers keep mentioning is that of George Savage, who in the 1975 Grand Finals stunned the capacity crowd at Twin Falls' Magic Bowl by coasting past four opponents in record-style. for an even 1000. The Shelley left-hander averaged 250 for the four games. Nampajs Ken Howard has proven to be the most prolific ISBA bowler.

Not only has Howard won nine tournaments, but he was recently chosen to participate in the ABC Masters tournament in Oklahoma City next spring. Howard is a three- year member of the i a Association, and was the ISBA player of the year in 1974-75. The nod may go to the local shooters, however. Ai Pederson, who never seems to get any older, has won five events, and was the 1973-74 player of the year. Dennis Bergendorf won the Redskins Set opening ISBA tournament in Hurley a month ago.

Jim Cooper, started slow this season, bui came up with a 659 Major League series last week.

Cooper may be set back by a muscle pull suffered earlier this week, however. The 30-year-old Pocatellan said he is so motivated by the thought' of appearing on television that the pain will not bother him. KIFI will broadcast the finals of the Rowland Open on a tape-delay basis Sunday night. ISBA officials say there are still a few tickets left for an intimate breakfast with Don Johnson. The breakfast will be limited to 20 fans Sunday morning, with the cost of $10 a plate going to defray the cost of booking Johnson.

Those interested in attending should contact either Karen or Tough Guy Lanes before Saturday. A record field of 120 bowlers is expected in the Rowland Open, and about 30 of those will share over $2,500 in prize money. The champion will receive a check for 5500. Qualifying squads will roll Saturday night and twice Sunday at Karen Lanes, with match game finals Sundaj evening factor. "Close games favor the Reds because we can steal on them," said Morgan, who has been the hub of the Big Red Machine attack since his arrival from Houston four years ago.

The Reds, who finished the season with a flourish by winning 10 of their last 11 games, have stolen 168 bases in 204 attempts during the season, a percentage of .800. Pittsburgh had 49 in 77 tries. "People say these two teams are so similar on offense," said Morgan, a leading candidate for the league's Most Valuable Player Award. "I don't agree. We both do things different ways.

The Reds get a lot of people on base with walks and steal more. We can beat people in so many ways." The best-of-five series opens at Cincinnati with lefthanders Don Gullett. 15-4, and Jerry Reuss, 18-11, dueling in the dusk. Both games in Cincinnati are scheduled for 4 p.m. starting limes, a fact thai causes considerable consternation among hitters and fielders.

The Pirates arrive today for a workout in the tricky shadows and glaring sun that torments players. "A lot is going to depend on Ihe shadows." said Morgan, who hit .327 this year. Teammate Pete Rose agrees. "The sun is murder here Ihen and we are going lo have to follow the pilches real close," said the Cincinnati third baseman, who had his troubles with Pirate pitching this year. A .317 hitter for the season.

Rose had a paltry .217 mark against Pittsburgh's lefty-dominated staff. The last time the two clubs squared off in post-season play was 1973, with Cincinnati winning three games to two. The winning run was scored by George Foster, who scampered home from third on Bob Moose's wild pitch. The two clubs spilled some blood in a free-for-all brawl a year ago, but Morgan says, "We still all talk to each other. "The only rivalry between us is the fact we bolh consider ourselves the best team and we try to prove it.

Even though we lost the World Series to Oakland in 1972 I thought we were the best team in baseball and Pittsburgh was second." Limit Change, New Opener Head Angling Proposals By KEN NORRIE Idaho Fish-Game If you or your family enjoys fishing, if you have an interest in the fishing regulations or if you would like to know how fishing regulations are formulated and finally made into law, you will want lo attend the Idaho Department cf Fish and Game public hearing Monday.

The hearing will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Room 407 of ihe ISU Student Union Building. The purpose of the meeting is to present io the public the proposed 1976 fishing regulations. These are not yet established regulations but merely proposals that will be presented to the Idaho Fish and Game Commission at its meeting Oct. 21-22.

Those attending the hearing may comment on Ihe IFG's recommendations as well as make their own recommendations. Two major changes are proposed. The department is recommending that the 1976 general fishing season in Southeast Idaho open on June 5, instead of Memorial Day weekend which has been the practice in past years. Another change affects the limit on trout, char and grayling. The limit would be changed from a weight limit to a length limit.

The limit would be 10 fish, no more than five of which could exceed 12 inches and no more than two of those five could exceed 18 inches. The idea behind the limit change is to simplify the requirements, both for the angler and for the department. Anglers would no longer need to carry a scale to weigh their limit. All interested sportsmen are urged to attend. Mult'; Resort Condominium Ownership or SAN DltGO World I'M" rnorn til ft.mil, Ml mill mum Full pri J7100.
