McCone, appointed chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, is scheduled to arrive Friday morning by air from the east for a one-day orientation and briefing visit lo (be National Reactor Testing Station. McCone will be Hymen G. Rickover, chief of AF.C's Naval ReactorJtanch. McCone will visit the Naval Re- aclor Facility and possibly other projects at the NRTS and if time permits confer with the staff of the Commission's Idaho Operations Office e'nplaning for the Hanford Plant at Richland, Washington Friday evening.

McCone was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as a member of the AEC last July 9 and his appointment as chairman.of the commission was subsequently announced by President- McCone obtained an -engineering degree 'rom the University of California in 1922. He worked as a riveter and boilermaker-for the Consolidated Steel Corp. of Los Angeles and by 1933 rose to'execu- tive vice president and director with that concern. In 1937, he was i a i i Bechtel-McCpne-Parsons Corp.

He was named president of the firm, which specialized in design engineering and construction of refineries and power plants. During. World War II, McCone iccame president California Shipbuilding Corp. which built 467 vartime ships valued at about $1 lillion. Following the war, McCone purchased the Joshua Hendy a reighter and a line and for several years he has been chair- nan of the board of the Pacific Par East Line.

He resigned his position with the Hendy firm upon appointment to the commission. McCone was appointed lo the Air policy Commission by President Truman in 1947. He was named special deputy of Secretary of Defense Forrcstal in 1948, and in that josition prepared the first and second budgets of the newly-organized Department of Defense. In 1950 and 1951, McCone served as Undersecretary of the Air Force. He is a trustee of the California Institute of Technology, and in Mrs.
