I. H. NELSON -S- Executor nf Ihe Esialc Emma L. Elrod, Deceased BLACK, BLACK Sc OLIVER Pocatcllo, Idaho Executor April May 1,1, II, 1M4 Texan Sets Moscow On Its Ear By DOC QUIGG. NEW YORK (UP)--IE a top yapping about juvenile delinquency long enough, it might be veil to ponder the fact that a couple of our juveniles are international sensations.

One is Bobby Fischer of Brook- yn, who at 14 set the chess world on its ear by defeating grand masters to win the U. S. championship, lie now is entitled lo a crack nl the world chess title, held by Smyslov of Russia. The other is Van Cliburn of Slireveport, and Kilgore, who at 23 set Moscow on its ear this week by winning the Tchaikovsky international piano competition. This extroverted Irish- Texan (both his mother and his father are of Irish descent) gave his lirst public concert in Slireve- port at the age of three.

When he was six, he and his mother, concert pianist, were giving recitals together. On his lirst day in school in Shreveport, the teacher asked him If he could read. 1 he said, "I can read music," When he came Jiera in 1954 (o compete for the coveted Edgar N. Levcntritt Award, they laughed when he sat down to play (honest, that's what I'm told by those who were there). He looked like a misplaced basketball player.

He's six-feet-four but has a mop of curly hair that springs up so that he looks about six-feet-seven. Has Russian Style His hand spans 11'4 inches. He walks with a gangling lope. His piano style Is as Russian as his dialect is east Texan. When he nishcd playing, he had won the ward.

Mrs. l.evcnlritt decided lo i ivc a reception for him a i rst New York Philharmonic ap- carancc. She told him to bring long any friends from home who ad come to hear him. Came the reception, and Mrs. had to fight her way nto the room through a mob of trangers.

"Honey," said Van, weeping an arm toward 75 Te.x- ans, "see these people? These aro a lew of mah friends." Oiburn's Southern ways and Russian style got i nickname "Uncle Vanya" at Colunv lia Artists Management, which las managed i for the last our years. When he decided to jo to Moscow, i i a H. Judd, vice president at Columbia, said: 'They'll have to get an interpre- cr lo interpret for Van's English ntcrpretcr." Crazy About Hominy Grits Cliburn (pronounced Clyburn) is, according to Judd, crazy about lominy grits, black-eyed peas, lam with red gravy, potlikker, collard and mustard greens, and ried steak. There has been some speculation hero about hew Russian food has hit i He was born in Shreveport, where his parents founded a mission a grew into a church. To keep him quiet when he was a tot, his mother used to give him a triangle to bang on i the church music, Kilgore, Ihe a i joined the First Haptis 1 church music.

In Kilgore, the choir. In New York, he joined the Calvary Baptist Church, just down the street from Carnegie Hall. He has i hymns and shor pieces for the church, and com posed a choral setting for i psalm which was sung on thi radio here. He's a friendly character who loves people--and practical jokes Quite a boy.
