POCAT6LLO, IDAHO, SUNDAY, AUGUST 29, IDAHO STATE JOURNAL-SECTION 7 TO ATLANTIC CITY SEPT. 4-11 Idahoan Hopes 'Miss America' as Exciting as Past Titlists Claim By GARY RAVl LINGS Journal Correspondent PRESTON-KaNae Petersen, is thoroughly enjoying reigning as Miss Idaho '76 except that he: social life has been "hurting just a little." The petite 5-3 burnette is looking with great anticipation to the Miss America pageant Sept. 4-11, not only for the thrill of the experience but "to see if it's as exciting as they say." She is referring to conversation she has had with at least two other Miss Idaho titlists, Terri Harding and Sharon Davis, who have been helping her prepare for competition. On a brief visit "back home" to appear at the Franklin County Fair, the enthusiastic Preston High School graduate talked candidly about her title and the forthcoming Miss America competition. Since she won the Miss Idaho title in Boise last June, she has been busy making special appearances, gathering her wardrobe and, putting the finishing touches on her talent presentation.

She will perform a medley of organ numbers, "I've Got Rhythm," "Sing," and "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing." She has been going to Salt Lake City for lessons under her teacher, JoAnn Harmon, in preparation for the Atlantic City competition. "When I got that book the other day, it really scared me," she said of the Miss America pageant information she had received in the mail. "The competition looks very good. It Miss Idaho, RaNae Petersen (She models for "standing room only" crowds at Franklin Fair.) would be tun to be in the top 10," she said. RaNae says that the former Miss Idaho's have been giving lots of good advice and telling her to "think tall." Asked if she thought her height would have an effect, she said, "I'm hoping that it won't." She gives a lot of credit for help in her preparation to Joann Berg, a member of the pageant board in Boise.

She has been helping Miss Petersen with modeling and with preparation for judges' interviews. She is a former Miss Oregon and had a daughter who followed in her footsteps. "My time hasn't really been my own," Miss Petersen said of life following her selection as Miss Idaho. She has decided to attend Idaho State University instead of Boise State to be within driving distance from home. She also will be able to make more appearances.

She said most of her ap-1 pearances in a speaking and performing nature have been in Southeast Idaho and she would like to be available for more of them. Collecting a Miss America pageant wardrobe, although enjoyable, has taken RaNae many hours while staying with her chaperone family in Boise. I Carrolls' of Boise has given her I the wardrobe that she will wear while in Atlantic City. She will leave with most of I her 18 family members and I Idaho pageant officials on a I flight to Atlantic City on Sept. 4.

Most of the time will be spent in I rehearsals until the pageant I competition starts on Sept. 8. "We'll be divided into three groups of 17 girls. We'll actually only be competing with those in our group in talent, swimsuit and evening gown (on-stage personality) competition. We'll do one each night," Miss Idaho stated.

"They'll select one winner each night from these contests and that's how the ten finalists will be picked. They are giving us a tour of the Washington, D.C. area following the pageant, and we'll be back about Sept. 15." Asked when she would return if she won, she smiled and said she wasn't worried about that. She'd be happy just to be able to make the final ten.

Some relatives of the Lyle and Grace Petersen family of Preston are scheduled to go to Atlantic City to ch'eef her on in the competition. agreed in jest that the entire Petersen Drapery business in Preston would probably be closed down during that period. RaNae can't stop talking 'about her royal treatment since her Miss Idaho selection and how "loyal and complimentary the people from home have been." She sayS everyone has offered her support in the forthcoming pageant and that a few have offered her suggestions. She says the tips have been welcomed, and some have been incorporated into her talent selection. RaNae wasn't asked what she would do if she got "that hope and dream of every girl" to reign as Miss America, but when vou're one of the 50 now in WESTCOM HOMES are truly designed for family living!
