SISTER REGISTERS ALSO 1975- 76 Miss A laska, Wanting To See Other 49 States, Enrolls as ISU Coed Last August Cindy Marie Suryan was getting ready to go to the Miss America pageant in Atlantic City, N.J., as Miss Alaska. This August she is getting acquainted with the campus at Idaho State University. She has enrolled as a freshman on nearly $3,000 in scholarships won at Miss America-related pageants.

Actually, Miss Suryan entered her first pageant--Miss Kodiak--as an incentive to take off pounds. "I was fairly heavy," she recalled, "and I wanted to lose weight." It took strict dieting but she dropped 23 pounds. She became Miss Kodiak and the recipient of a scholarship of about $400. Then she won the Miss Alaska title and a $2,000 scholarship. Although she didn't place in the Miss America Pageant, she received a $500 scholarship.

The Washington-born Miss Suryan has resided for 11 years in Alaska, where her father is a cannery processing foreman. Until going to the Miss America pageant, she had never traveled past Seattle, Wash. "I got to see the East coast," she said, "that was big for me." In Atlantic City Cindy met the Idaho entrant, Teri Harding, Twin Falls, who told her about the state. But at that time Cindy had her mind on the national pageant and didn't realize she would be coming to Idaho a year later. Cindy did return to Kodiak after the pageant and worked as a computer operator.

However, she wanted to get out of the state of Alaska to see how the other 49 states are. She liked what she read about Idaho and Idaho State University and decided to make the move. The 21-year-old Cindy, oldest of five children, was accompanied by her 18-year-old sister, Linda. Both are enrolling as freshmen, Linda as a zoology major and Cindy as a general studies major. They are roommates at Garrison House.

The sisters from Alaska are glad they chose Idaho. What's more, they are looking forward to Sept. 18 and ISU's first home football game in the Minidome. From the state where hockey is the featured fall-winter sport, they have never seen a live football game. Alpha Omicron Pi Night's Dream" features Shakespeare entertainment.)
