Scott's demonic energy works well for him here, giving a force and power that might elude a weaker actor. Trish Vandevere is appealing in the role of the historic society woman and Melvyn Douglas is superb as a crusty old millionaire. is showing at Cinema Center, Edgemoor and Naa-man's Drive-in.) Behind Howard Johnson's, 113 S. DuPont Rt. 13 328-9960 By BERNARD DREW Gannett Newi Service There are good ghost stories like "The Innocents," bad ones like the recent "Amityville Horror" and so-so ones like "The Fog." "The Changeling" is nCt only the best of the recent ones, it is the best ghost story movie in years. It's guaranteed to freeze the blood. Brilliantly directed by Peter Medak, the film opens with George C.

Scott, a composer-conductor, losing his wife and daughter In a freak automobile accident. Devastated, Scott realizes he must leave New York City and he accepts a job at a university in Seattle, which would permit him to compose as well as teach. He meets Irish Vandevere, who works for the Historical Society, and shows him a huge, Victorian mansion that has been unoccupied for years. He moves in. At 6 a.m.

one day, he is awakened by horrible banging. He shrugs this off, but it reoccurs the next day. Later, he is at the piano but his composition eludes him somehow. A door to the room silently opens and when Scott looks to see who is there, he can see no one. He returns to the piano and suddenly everything falls into place and he composes a lovely lullaby.

When he next sees Miss Vandevere he informs her of the strange happenings in the house and learns that previous tenants also have complained. An old secretary informs him that the house doesn want people. When he returns home he is nearly struck in the face by falling glass which not only has come from the inside of the house but a small room upstairs. He immediately goes to it and finds amid the cobwebs, a little wheelchair. Obviously the person who used it was a child.

He also finds an ancient music box, which when opened plays the lullaby Scott has just composed. He discovers that whatever evils occurred in this room happened in 1909. He and Miss Vandevere go to the library archives and discover stage CANDLELIGHT MUSIC DINNER THE- Mien, ibm win HtM, ArtM U.S. 30, Dewmwgtewn, Pa. "The Best of Broadway Buffet at 30.
