BEST BET: Missioner (Seventh Race) getting Coletta a soft drink, and that he later was offered $100 by Coletta "to forget the whole thing. Timothy Smith, a chemist for Bioquest Laboratory which is used by the commission, testified that positive tests for dexamethasone was found in urine and blood samples taken from both horses. Smith said dexamethasone is an inflammatory agent which relieves soreness and helps a horse race to his potential. Both Coletta and his attorney, Vincent E. Halleran of Freehold, N.J.

strongly contested testimony presented by the commission. Coletta pointed out that Flenner could have become confused after Coletta, at the inspector's request, went in the stall to take the sample from Gymea Gold after the horse became balky. Coletta said he couldn't have offered Flenner $100 because he didn't have that much money. Coletta said he told Flenner, after giving him the $20 to get the soft drink, to get one for himself, and when Flenner refused, to' keep $1 or $2 as a favor for going for the soft drink for him. Flenner earlier testified that he had seen a large wad of bills in Coletta's wallet.

Flenner also testified that Coletta himself had tried to urinate in the container before taking the sample. "I had to go the bathroom," before being called to take the sample from the balky horse, Coletta said. As for the drug charge, Coletta said, "If I knew both horses had dexamethasone, why would I switch. There was no dexamethasone in either of those horses." Holleran questioned Flenner in much detail on identification of the horses and in his summary said he felt the inspector made a mistake. By IZZY KATZMAN Staff reporter Fred Coletta a trainer-driver from Jersey City, N.J., was fined $200 and suspended 15 days for "conduct injurious to racing" by the Delaware Harness Racing Commission at a hearing at Brandy wine Raceway Wednesday night.

The announcement was made by Frank Paintin, commission chairman. Coletta, 27, had been charged with switching horses in the "spit box," at Brandywine during the night of Aug. 5. The "spit box," in the paddock area, is where urine is taken from horses to test for illegal medication. Paintin also announced that appeals by two other drivers, Tony Domino and Mark Schwartz, were denied.

Domino had appealed a judges' ruling of driving half in and half out and of interfering with another horse, which led to his horse being disqualified from a first-place finish on June 20. The horse, Selka By By, had been placed third. Schwartz had appealed a three-day suspension because Presiding Judge Jack Stewart refused the trainer-driver's request to take a Monday as one of the suspended days. Monday is a dark day at Brandywine and Stewart, citing a Delaware Harness Commission rule, said all suspended days must be racing days. According to testimony by Lawrence Flenner, a paddock inspector, Coletta had switched Harry Houdini in the "spit Gymea Gold.

Flenner discovered this, he said, after noting that Gymea Gold is a mare and the sample was being taken from a gelding. Flenner also said that he had been offered change from a $20 bill after Compiled from wire services Mercury Morris charged Former Miami Dolphins star running back Eugene "Mercury" Morris and four other men were arrested on cocaine charges Wednesday in Miami, police said. Officers who raided a home they said was either owned or rented by Morris "seized a large quantity of cocaine, three vehicles, a large sum of money and assorted firearms." Morris, 35, was charged with one count of cocaine trafficking whjch carries a sentence of 15 years in prison and $250,000 fine with conviction three counts of cocaine delivery, three counts of cocaine possession, one count of conspiracy to traffick cocaine and one count of marijuana possession. Morris was booked into the Dade County Jail overnight and will receive a bond hearing today. Authorities said a pistol, carbine, a shotgun and a rifle were seized during the raid, but indicated that the suspects didn't resist.

"Mercury Morris is a gentleman," said an arresting officer, who refused to give his name. Paiement will appeal Bill Watters, agent for forward Wilf Paiement of the Quebec Nordi-ques, said Wednesday he hopes his client will be granted a new trial. Paiement was ordered by a Detroit court on Tuesday to pay former Detroit Red Wing Dennis Polonich $850,000 for injuries suffered in an on-ice scuffle during a 1978 National Hockey League game. No Iowa games for ref Basketball referee Jim Bain said he will not officiate any University of Iowa games this year because the Big Ten Conference fears for his safety. Bain, who made a controversial call at the end of the Iowa-Purdue game at West Lafayette, last March 6, also said the uproar following that contest cost him a position as the Big Ten's supervisor of officials.

Bain said he received telephoned and written death threats as a result of the foul he called against Iowa player Kevin Boyle as time expired in the Purdue game.
